Hi all, I am looking at the lens from the title, and would appreciate any coments from the owners. I coudn't find much about it on this forum.

I read about it on Rockwell's site, and he didn't like it much, especially due to it's curvative field of focus.

21mm would be too wide for my taste, so my options are 24mm Lux or Elmar. 1.4 is very tempting, yet three times more expenisive. When I think about it, I'm almost in the Nocti area (different focal lenght but eternal wish ;)).

I did not like the Summilux 24mm I tested. This is my favorite focal length, and there was nothing about the SX 24 that appealed to me. Nothing at all. Incidentally, the separation you get (i.e., selective focus) is not as great as I had hoped. Distortion of organic shapes struck me as quite noticeable, whereas SX 21 I had for a couple of years was OK.

In addition to the Elmar, which is a truly great lens, I have the Elmarit-M 24mm f/2.8 APSH. The Elmarit is magnificent, IMHO, and you can find primo pieces offered on line now for less than the lens cost new. Compared to the Elmar, the Elmarit draws a more delicate and elegant line, is 1 stop faster and keeps exceptionally good closest focus.

Same here - I personally would rather go for 18mm if I want to step into "super wide angle territory"...

I love the 24mm SX! I have 24/35/75 lenses and use them all more or less equally. I hate flash, it just doesn't fit my style of photography, but I take a lot of images indoor and in bad light, for my taste this lens is the best you can get for this. The rendering is lovely, it's sharp and I like the option of isolating subjects at least up to a certain level. It's big and heavy, so you should test one before buying it. I don't mind its size, others do... But do consider it if you want 24mm...

Don't worry about 24 lux, it has some weaknesses (big, heavy, need correction in postprocessing) but it's great lens.

Some imperfections are on par with 0.95 Noci and both are my most used combo (especially for nigh shooting).

It has only one real cons; lack of normal filter thread.

BTW It's still tiny comparing to Nikon/Canon alternatives!

Could someone post a portrait shoot at 0.7m with the Elmar?

I would like to see the oof area. I uderstand the sepration will be minimal, but I'd just like to see it.

This are few samples from Elmarit I found online, and for me that would be enough of subject isolation for 24mm. Just a touch of "pop" would satisfy me for now.

Not sure I could get anything similar with the Elmar.

I am quite happy with my 24 'lux. I primarily use it when I need a fast and wide lens in difficult lighting situations. The focusing is less critical than with the Noctilux and you can use longer exposure times hand-held than you can with the Nocti. These photos were taken in tropical darkness with available light from hand-held flashlights. They are releasing newly hatched turtles to the sea. M240 * ISO 3200 * EV-1 * 1/30 * f/1.4.

I don't think I could have done these photos without that particular lens. But as the others have mentioned, it is heavy. I do not use it all too often for that reason.

I've been very happy with my 24 lux.

Had to choose either the 24 lux or 21 lux. Couldn't afford both.

Here are some shots with the 24 lux.

I believe that you would find the Elmar too high in micro-contrast for portraits (unless you are shooting very young or un-self-conscience people :)). I purchased the Elmarit ASPH to get shots like this, which I posted a while ago. The Elmarit at 0.7m has much better rendering of faces, IMHO, than the Elmar and is still almost too sharp for portraits of adults.

And she really let you publish that first photo?

  • 5 months later...

Never tried the 24mm focal length on a Leica. I have the 21 SEM as I could neither justify the cost nor the additional weight/size of the Lux for the sort of usage I get out of such a wide angle lens. I'd have to say the 21 SEM really rocks :)

I shoot this lens on my M240 and MM and love every aspect of it. I like that I don't need to use the EVF unless I want to, and that any wide angle distortion is very minimal particularly when you hold it level. I also have a Nikon kit including the 24mm f/1.4 which I never thought could be surpassed by the quality of image it produces ... until I got the 24mm Summilux. I'm somewhat baffled how anyone could not like this lens. I too believe a 21mm would be too wide for most of my use, but there are many passionate owners of the 21mm producing wonderful images.
