A new, safer bridge was recently completed. A contract stipulation for the dismantling of the old bridge is that no debris be allowed to drop into the bay. Piece by piece, the steel will be removed for recycling. The new bridge construction, at 6.3 billion, was several billion dollars over budget and way behind schedule.
