LocalHero1953 Posted May 15, 2014 Share #1 Posted May 15, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) What do people do while travelling for weeks at a time to: - store, review/cull and back-up images. - do enough pp to post to websites & forums. I can store images by just having enough SD cards, but that doesn't help with reviewing. I could download to an iPad, and it probably has enough apps for pp, but I find file management on iOS impenetrable. I know there is a LR app for iPad, but that requires me to be a CC subscriber, which I've avoided so far. Getting files OFF an iPad sometimes seems slower and harder than getting them there in the first place. Uploading large numbers of images to the cloud while travelling seems a non-starter to me. I could take a laptop, which might be my best solution, but I'd like to hear what others have done. Are there any other useful gadgets out there e.g. a solid state hard drive I could link to my iPad? To moderators: I've posted this in the M240 forum because the sheer size of M files, and the lack of USB port, limits some options. But move it to another forum if you need to. Jeff S Posted May 16, 2014 Share #2 Posted May 16, 2014 Various options discussed here (and in other threads like this one). I'm in the camp that prefers carrying a load of cards, much like film in the old days, and waiting until I get home. Others prefer using a laptop, including an attached external drive for another layer of protection. The MacAir 11 inch (or 13) is satisfactory, but for me, the MacAir is for emails, etc, not so much for photo storage or review. Jeff
Echo63 Posted May 16, 2014 Share #3 Posted May 16, 2014 I have a macbook air 11" - built in mid 2012 It is my only computer at home (at work we have windows desktops and a 15" macbook pro each, which gets used for work only) Its almost ipad sized, fits neatly in the back of my thinktank retro7 and has enough grunt to run PS and LR Sure its never going to be as quick as a desktop machine, but its still pretty quick. Mine is plenty snappy in LR, unless i am running low on HDD space (macs need at least 10% of the total drive space free to run well, preferably more) A spare 1tb portable drive or two will take care of any space issues (put stuff on two drives and keep them in different places, it makes it harder to lose everything) If you do buy one - get the most RAM you can - its soldered in and cant be upgraded later The only thing upgradeable is the SSD (hard drive) which are available from other world computing, and probably other places too.. jdlaing Posted May 16, 2014 Share #4 Posted May 16, 2014 I used a portable picture vault my last trip and it worked great. I just didn't want to carry a notebook this time.

Jeff S Posted May 16, 2014 Share #6 Posted May 16, 2014 I have used a Colorspace UDMA with a 500GB hard drive. Highly recommended.. Camera accessories Do you have UDMA2? I think reports are that the first version, which I used to use, does not deal well with M240 DNG. I never checked to see if it's upgradeable. wda Posted May 16, 2014 Share #7 Posted May 16, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Paul, while my travel has reduced in recent times, I use an Asus netbook with a copy of Lightroom loaded and also have a small external hard drive for extra backup and capacity. While my en route processing is basically ensuring ongoing secure backup, I do add keywords of the kind which can easily be forgotten and also delete obviously unneeded files. But serious editing awaits my return. The files are merged when I return home with my main LR catalogue. Note that Adobe permits a second copy for just such purposes. jip Posted May 16, 2014 Share #8 Posted May 16, 2014 I usually bring my MacBook Pro Retina, but if I cannot do that I bring lots of SD cards, and lots of Batteries, and a charger that works in the power outlet and on a car battery. If i'd be going to some place i'd know I'd run out of power, I would bring a M6 or MP or even a M3 or something.

Echo63 Posted May 16, 2014 Share #10 Posted May 16, 2014 Heres a quick pic to show how small the 11" MBAir is My Air, M240, spare memory card, X100 battery (it was in my bag at the time, has now gone on the shelf with my X100) and 4x AAA cells, and a AA-USB charger Welcome, dear visitor! LocalHero1953 Posted May 16, 2014 Author Share #11 Posted May 16, 2014 Thanks for all the suggestions. My wife has a MacBook Air, and I have a spare LR copy I can load on it, but I've been unsure about its performance on the Air rather than the Pro. And I thought there might be alternative solutions. I may have to give it a try.
sanyasi Posted May 16, 2014 Share #12 Posted May 16, 2014 If it is a weekend, I just rely on cards and review when I get home. If it is a workshop or a longer trip, I take a MacBook Pro and two small hard drives that are USB powered--about the size of a deck of cards. Now that Mac has gone solid state, it is too expensive to put lots of hard drive space on the computer, so that is why I went with the hard drives. One hard drive is for backup. I have the cards, so it isn't necessary. Two cameras and four lenses plus laptop and charger fit in a Think Tank bag that fits under the airplane seat. As for power, you can look at the specs, but my impression is that we have arrived at a point in time where that really isn't an issue if you are just reviewing and editing photographs, particularly if Photoshop isn't involved. Basic processors are fast. Now if you are editing a two-hour documentary or designing graphics for an action movie, that is probably a different story. I agree about the iPad. A big disappointment given its early promise. Although it fits in my bad with the laptop, and it is great for reading books and using the web. I now routinely keep all manufacturer instruction manuals on it using GoodReader.

I never checked to see if it's upgradeable. Jeff I have the first version. It is very fast and will store (but not adequately display) DNGs from the M, other than DNGs from the 64gb Sandisk Extreme card which are not in a format it can handle. lenicolas Posted May 16, 2014 Share #14 Posted May 16, 2014 For long trips, I carry one or two USB drives. Every other day I borrow a computer to back up my photos (from a hotel desk, in a cyber cafe, from another traveller...) And keep them in the sd cards too. I just bought a tablet which I will use to edit and post some jpegs (I don't bother with DNGs on the tablet). I wouldn't go back to traveling with a laptop unless there a professional need sent from a phone with auto-correct.
efreed2754 Posted May 16, 2014 Share #15 Posted May 16, 2014 Like others use a MacBook Air with LR loaded. Use to view photos and as a backup. Prefer not to erase SD cards as they are the main source to load on PC when get home. Works well and then erase once home assuming all images loaded correctly. Still try to bring enough cards so at least one (or 2) for each location. Now that I"m using compression with M240, each card holds a ton more than the M9 cards. Also don't use smaller cards so not too many images on each -- spread the risk thing. Ed
chris_tribble Posted May 16, 2014 Share #16 Posted May 16, 2014 Sony Vaio with 750 GB HD and 8MB Ram. i7 Intel processor. Had it for 3 years and it will do fine for another two or three I think. I calibrate the monitor with i1 Display pro and run LR and PS CC. Best combination for me. If I'm on a work job I carry a couple of Lacie 1TB external HDDs for backup. hoppyman Posted May 16, 2014 Share #17 Posted May 16, 2014 Enough 16GB cards so I don't have to reuse them until after the trip (at least enough for 5000 frames or so I guess, that's a lot of shooting) MacBook Pro (LR &PS CC) & external 1TB HDD (second copy automatic to that on import) iPad for portable photo album. If I fill all of that I'm having a VERY good trip!
jdlaing Posted May 16, 2014 Share #18 Posted May 16, 2014 500 gigs of storage. A nifty little preview screen (once I figured out how to do Leica M240 RAW files). A nice small travel package. jaapv Posted May 17, 2014 Share #20 Posted May 17, 2014 Thanks for all the suggestions. My wife has a MacBook Air, and I have a spare LR copy I can load on it, but I've been unsure about its performance on the Air rather than the Pro. And I thought there might be alternative solutions. I may have to give it a try. The Air works surprisingly well for simple editing. I use it with LR, C1 and Elements 11. Btw, I have plenty of cards, so I retain the images on SD card as well when traveling.
