The series number of M is weird

Hello everyone,

I purchased M last month and asked some dealers about M, so they sent me some outer box with series and produce date pictures.

After looking through the three pics, I found that there is one produced on January 24th has the bigger series number that the other two which were produced later.

Also, the one I bought also has the bigger number but produced before the other two.

Anyone know does Leica name the order of series according to date or is this case normal?

I would say normal, my chrome M was dated 1/9/2014 and has a lot earlier serial number than these. They must have just started putting a date on the fabrication stickers because my black M was built in November 2013. I know because I bought it as soon as the dealer had it in stock from Leica.

Yes, normal : do not forget that as for the BODY, s/n is just engraved on a very small and cheap component (the shoe's rail) , surely produced (and engraved) somewhere in large batches , and routed to the assembly line, probably with a someway "casual" order in respect to the s/n engraved onto each one : at the end of the production (and testing...) line there will be a packaging facility in which they print the stickers according to the s/n of the bodies, plus date time etc... . If "feeding" of engraved s/n has a certain degree of randomness, it will be maintained at the end of the process.

If the highest serial number needed to have the most recent date it would cause chaos on the production line because all work would have to stop if a camera had to go back to quality control. So, just like Fender guitars which also take their random serial numbers from a pre-manufactured allotment, the camera (or guitar) is finished when it is finished. So there is little point in demanding a higher serial number at a Leica dealers because it may have been sitting on the shelf the longest.:)
