M 240 OVF focusing is off

Interesting...was just about to start a new topic on similar...for me I get better focus with the RF than EVF....I just got the 21 SEM and was playing around today.

Maybe I just don't know how to use EVF yet but I am seriously considering returning it.

I would first take a shot with the EVF and then with RF and I to get into focus I would need to move the focus ring by 2mm...

Anyone else experience this?

Once you move the focus ring that 2mm, does the EVF remain in focus?

I've found it difficult to critically focus lenses with a large DOF (or at a smaller aperture) using an EVF, the only way I could get it exact was to open the lens up, focus and then set the required aperture.

Interesting as I get sharp images with all my 3 lenses through RF and unsharp through EVF....

This sounds really an oddity to me... ... it's just 5 momths I have had my M240 + EVF... but mounted on it a number of lenses (and also some odd/funny combinations...) and one of my firm points is that "if EVF OK ---> focus OK"

The only inconsistencies I observed have been due to focus shift in some specific situations (and lenses) , if you focus on EVF wide open, then close a stop or two, then shoot...

Yes - exactly like an SLR - that is why the automatic aperture was invented.

err..... that is basically impossible ....... the live-view and EVF will always be correct whatever the RF or lens calibration......

but ......

EVF focussing is only really worth it at 75mm and up ..... or fast 50mm lenses wide open ...... the depth of the 'in focus' area of focus peaking with other lenses and smaller apertures is so deep that you can't really tell where the optimum point is.

I would keep the EVF for longer lenses for focussing..... and sub 28mm lenses for framing ... where you can easily judge focus without peaking .... or use the RF .... which is what I do.... then compose with the EVF.

...but don't overlook the focus shift issue I quoted in my previous post... ;)... I don't know which lenses ppolla does refer to... we in the LUF are accustomed to think of "focus shift... ah... the Lux 35 asph, yes.." :o but playing with M, EVF and my bunch of historical lenses I got funny surprises on this matter , at short distances.... and thanks to the 24MP of M... I recently posted an almost-macro pic of a rose, taken with the Summarex 85... IT SHIFTS from f1,5 to 2 !! And... also the Planar 50 for Contarex !!! And... even the Hektor 125 !!! I mean, in well controlled environment... tripod... focus with EVF, lens wide open to nail focus... close 1-2 stops for shooting... AH !!!

Lot of fun... lenses designed for honest film in the '50s/'60s... :o now, I tend to use EVF at the real aperture (unless in the few instances I use 11/16 or so) : you focus well...work quickier, and no strange surprises on focus... to use an old style acronym..."WYSIWYG"...

Most tested with EVF with 21 SEM....

More tests tonight!

So I tested the 21 SEM again....and all images 100% sharp...using RF.

With my lens arsenal 21, 28 and 50...I actually think I don't need the EFV...except for framing the 21 lens shots...

I have a few more days to make the decision and possibly return it.

With that lens collection it is indeed useless. Better get an optical 21 mm viewfinder. Or forget about accessory viewfinders altogether and use live view when you need exact framing.

this happened to me and it drove me batshit crazy until i figured it out....do you normally wear corrective lenses (reading glasses/far-sightedness)?

If you cannot achieve perfect focus with the EVF, but focus perfectly with the rangefinder, you haven't adjusted the EVF diopter to your eyesight. I am nearsighted and wear glasses but even without glasses I can focus a rangefinder. Even though everything is unsharp through the rangefinder when I'm not wearing glasses, I can still find the point where the two images best align and thus focus the rangefinder. Especially when you are slightly far-sighted (require reading glasses) the EVF has to be adjusted to your eyes with the diopter adjustment otherwise you will not be able to focus the electronic image correctly. Focus shift will only affect the rangefinder OVF, not the EVF.
