Has the DNG Leica RAW file format changed from the M-9?

The reason I ask is I started using a digital file device where I transfer the photos to it from my SD cards while traveling. The DNG files transfer okay but are not visible on the device's LCD screen if I set the M to record RAW only. If I set it to RAW +JPEG fine it works. I thought there was an embedded JPEG in the raw file for that purpose.

The other RAW format I use from time to,time is ORF and that works okay.

When I transfer to,the computer (Lightroom) the RAW + JPEG fine it works okay. When I try to transfer a plain RAW file from the device Lightroom doesn't see the file but it is on the device.

There should not be a problem - unless the files are too large for your device to handle.

Possible! But isn't there an embedded JPEG in the DNG without having to set the camera for DNG/JPEG and shooting only RAW?

Yeah, but something has to read the side car. What is the "device" you are using?

A Digital Photo Vault. The list of supported files includes DNG. You put the card in a slot and it transfers the files to the memory and has a LCD screen to view the files. Reads all kinds of cards.

The only ones that will not show are the RAW files from the M-240. RAW files from other cameras work fine. When I set the camera for RAW only the file is transferred into the memory in the divide but the picture won't show on the LCD. Only a garbled mess.

Could you provide a link to the product?

Here is what I suspect. These products don't always support DNG format of storing our M files. So, even though the DNG format has a preview jpg file in the container, the product you have may not be able to extract it from the DNG file. Although, when you store your M photo as a DNG + jpg, the storage device can both store the DNG portion and read the separate jpg file that is created by the M.

I would just tell the M to store DNG + jpg in a low resolution so you can view your files on your Photo Vault. That seems to be the only way to work this device you have. You will have a DNG backed up and a viewable jpg. You can discard the jpg when you get home.

Is this what you are asking?

Rick

DNG is a rather versatile raw format so many manufacturers do not include the more obscure features. It took Apple nearly a year to implement MM DNGs.

The M9 was using DNG 1.0 format while the M (Typ 240) now is using DNG 1.3. Maybe your image-storing device can handle the former but not the latter?

Looks that way. It stores the photos great but I just can't preview them on the screen.

Is it something like this ? Album Portable Digital Photo Book - Digital Camera Warehouse

I was vaguley thinking to buy one... but think that, at the end, you probably can get similar functions with some app for tablets...

To be honest, I also think that tablet can do most of this things, sure, it's not the same, but 250-300$ for photo book for someone who is amateur and not use those thing for professional purpose, I don't think it's necessary ... Look at this https://www.camera-warehouse.com.au/album-leather-tan-natural-aluminium same one that you're saying
