euston Posted April 28, 2014 Share #1 Posted April 28, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Some contributors here like to post panoramas composed of several photos stitched together. These long thin pictures are restricted to 1024px on their longest side which is not always long enough to display them to best advantage. Should it, would it be possible to make an exception to the size rules for panoramas? I should add that I am not suggesting an increase in the file size limit. 250swb Posted April 28, 2014 Share #2 Posted April 28, 2014 Good idea. Steve
euston Posted May 14, 2014 Author Share #3 Posted May 14, 2014 It seems that the suggestion has not found favour. I wrote directly to Admin about it a couple of weeks ago but have had no reply. I am interpreting the silence as a rejection of the idea. I remain curious to know what the problem is perceived to be.
andybarton Posted May 14, 2014 Share #4 Posted May 14, 2014 I sometimes take and show panoramas myself (when I take photographs, that is), but I am at a loss to work out how one could restrict the display of "over width" shots to panoramas.
euston Posted May 14, 2014 Author Share #5 Posted May 14, 2014 I . . . I am at a loss to work out how one could restrict the display of "over width" shots to panoramas. If someone posted a panorama-shaped photo that wasn’t technically a panorama by whatever definition the site chose to adopt, would it really matter? In the unlikely event that the forum moderators found what they considered to be serious and repeated abuse, they have the means to deal with it. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. The system is programmed to accept dimensions up to 1024px x 1024px. Couldn’t it also be programmed to accept an additional size up to, say, 2000px x 500px to accommodate panoramas? I don't know whether that is technically feasible on this site or not but, if it is, I see no reason not to do it. No change is proposed to the permitted file size. Its a good idea, but i think the pic width is limited to reduce/eliminate over width post, that require scrolling sideways. probably a third of the images i have posted here are stitched from multiple frames. maybe allowing uploads of long skinny pictures, but displaying them at 1024px wide and having a "show image" button to expand it a bit wider is a solution

LUF Admin Posted May 14, 2014 Share #8 Posted May 14, 2014 Sorry if I didn't reply to this issue. Technically I can't solve this, the only way would be to allow wider images in general. We could add rules (written rules) not to use the wide option for "normal" images but I'm afraid this would cause a lot of work for us moderators - explaining why something is technically possible but forbidden. The other thing is: I have to move the Leica forum to a new software in the next weeks. Thus I'm reluctant to invest too much work in the old version of the software. The good news: I'm open to such a modification - but I have to see if the new software has something for us. And this will be an issue not at the top of my to do list Sorry Andreas
jaapv Posted May 14, 2014 Share #9 Posted May 14, 2014 It is always possible to publish a 1024 wide thumbnail and provide a link to a full-res image.
