Advertisement Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 Hi pop, Take a look here New softer leather skin for Monochrom. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wlaidlaw Posted April 9, 2014 Share #42 Posted April 9, 2014 OK here is the email address I used for Morgan Sparks info###@###cameraleather###dot###com### I am communicating with Morgan with no problems at all at the moment. This may be because I have bought quite a bit of stuff from him over the years and my email address squeaks round the side of his spam trap. John McMaster Posted April 9, 2014 Share #43 Posted April 9, 2014 I got a reply within hours last week when I was after another couple of kid leather covers, will see when they arrive ;-) john
BenMathes Posted April 10, 2014 Share #44 Posted April 10, 2014 I did my M9 in olive green leather and love it. Theories at Leica New Jersey did it and did a great job!
wlaidlaw Posted April 10, 2014 Share #45 Posted April 10, 2014 The “new” Morgan is a revelation. As there are some sub-variations on Leica 1© cameras i.e. Standard is not quite standard. There are different bottom cover locating “ear” shapes and many, like mine, have a metal covered focus checking port in the middle of the back. I have sent Morgan photos which he has acknowledged and all is under way. If he carries on like this, he will get so much business, he will be able to do it as a full time rather than part time job Wilson
BerndReini Posted April 13, 2014 Share #46 Posted April 13, 2014 Just a quick update. I emailed Morgan after posting in this thread and got a reply the next morning. I received my slate blue kid leather today and will attempt the covering next week when i have some quiet time. It seems that this thread may have positively impacted communication and organization at cameraleather.
jaapv Posted April 13, 2014 Share #47 Posted April 13, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I did not have too many complaints before, but I have been corresponding with Morgan these last few days and it was indeed remarkably efficient. NikonJeff Posted April 13, 2014 Share #48 Posted April 13, 2014 That would be welcome news - he really does make some excellent products. I purchased a cobalt blue kid leather for my silver M8. It unfortunately developed some dark spotting from use and he replaced it without question. Nice guy and a very small operation - hope this trend continues for him! Erik Gunst Lund Posted April 15, 2014 Share #49 Posted April 15, 2014 I ordered a Griptac cover for my M9 yesterday at Camera leather and today I recived a mail that it has been cut and shipped. Excellent service just as the last time I ordered one for my M8 two yeras ago. Griptac is the best for holding onto the camera IMHO, it is a bit better than the latest Leica M covers. stump4545 Posted April 15, 2014 Author Share #50 Posted April 15, 2014 is Rollie Black and Griptac the same? was thinking of going with a black Crocodile covering but seems for a low key, soft, steady grip I might be best served with the Rollie Black. jaapv Posted April 15, 2014 Share #51 Posted April 15, 2014 No. Rollei Black is a leather and Griptac is artificial. The structure is completely different too. CameraLeather’s website is very clear and provides many examples. Exotic leathers like Lizard and Snake are sometimes a bit hard on the fingers. My favorite material is Kid Leather but there is a lot to be said for Composite Leather as well.
stump4545 Posted April 15, 2014 Author Share #52 Posted April 15, 2014 oh sorry I see that. any advice to skin with Griptac over Rollie Black?
jaapv Posted April 15, 2014 Share #53 Posted April 15, 2014 No, I don’t like Griptac.
stump4545 Posted April 15, 2014 Author Share #54 Posted April 15, 2014 ok, Rollie Black vs. Black Kid does Rollie Black have a beter feel/grip then Kid?
jaapv Posted April 15, 2014 Share #55 Posted April 15, 2014 Personal taste. I had Rollei Black once and took ik off within two weeks. It may be that I was unlucky with my particular piece of leather which was thick, leading to frayed brown edges, and far too shiny for my taste. I use Kid leather as a standard in a variety of colours and like it best, but that is just me.
stump4545 Posted April 16, 2014 Author Share #56 Posted April 16, 2014 Jaapv, how do you feel about black Crocodile skins? less grip then kid? they look pretty nice but never felt one on an M.
menos I M6 Posted April 16, 2014 Share #57 Posted April 16, 2014 I just got my M9 back from Leica. During it's complete overhaul, the camera also had been re-skinned. As the original M8.2 and M9 leatherette is not available anymore, the body had been re-skinned with the current replacement of this "vulcanite style" Leica leatherette. I have to admit, that this new "vulcanite style" leatherette is by far the closest thing, that reminds me in feel and finish to my still original M3 Vulcanite covering from any leatherette, I have tried so far (Cameraleather and Aki Asahi included). I highly recommend this new original Leica covering. When you visit Leica CS, ask for the leatherette sample to see and feel the different leatherettes. This is the one that stands out. After a few days use, I kick myself, not having used the opportunity and have my Mono recovered in this one as well - I like it better than the original Mono covering (which feels and looks a bit more "quality" or "stylish" for a lack of a better word, but is clearly not as grippy and soft to the touch as the new vulcanite style). wlaidlaw Posted April 16, 2014 Share #58 Posted April 16, 2014 I too would be torn between Black kid and Rollei Black. As it has a little more give, I think you get fractionally better grip with the Rollei. However as Jaap says, it tends to get shiny and you have to keep this under control with leather food. To keep a semi-matt finish either saddle soap or neatsfoot oil are the best products. They also preserve the leather very well. They would be both be available from any country store or saddlery at a very modest cost. The basic products are just fine, you don’t need to buy Ffotheringay, Snooty & Hobbes (by royal appointment) cavalry saddle treatment etc. Wilson
jaapv Posted April 16, 2014 Share #59 Posted April 16, 2014 Jaapv, how do you feel about black Crocodile skins? less grip then kid? they look pretty nice but never felt one on an M. I don’t know. I never skinned a Crocodile.
john neal Posted April 17, 2014 Share #60 Posted April 17, 2014 Wilson, I would be careful about over zealous application od saddle-soap or neatsfoot oil - at some point it is going to go right through the thin leather and start degrading the bond with the adhesive layer. However, if you are the sort of person who likes to reskin their camera fairly often, I guess that may not be an issue
