How these birds can stand on ice and swim in icy water is amazing to me.

 

Actually, the problem the swans and geese run into is that they need an expanse of open water to take flight. Sometimes they land on frozen lakes like the one in your photo and are unable to get back into the air.

Good information Brent.

The area where I photographed had a lot of open water. Thinking about it, they did land and takeoff on the water, not the ice. I'd never given that a thought before.

Always fun to learn. Thanks for bringing this up.
