xjr Posted March 18, 2014 Share #1 Posted March 18, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) It would appear that one can buy a used M9 these days with less than 3000 actuations for quite less than £3000 ! The digital disease has reached Leica ! M240 de-values previous models substantially. So when a new "improved" M240 appears same will happen to existing model. I have one M9 and a Monochrome : No more purchases until these two die and they WILL sooner or later by definition. Not worth fixing when it happens. NOT so with my MP's or even M7. harvey999999 Posted March 18, 2014 Share #2 Posted March 18, 2014 Yes, but don't worry - human life on this planet will probably cease in the next few decades. Maybe your M9 will last until then.
tobey bilek Posted March 19, 2014 Share #3 Posted March 19, 2014 Use `em up and toss. Unless you have gobs of money, that is the cheapest.
darylgo Posted March 19, 2014 Share #4 Posted March 19, 2014 Consider stocks or other investments if you want a return on you money, Leica is a camera and it's intended use is photography.

A miller Posted March 26, 2014 Share #9 Posted March 26, 2014 I will make a bold prediction that the M9 will in time make a come back given its unique sensor and those who have lightly used ones will be sitting pretty. Similar to the nikon coolscans...
darylgo Posted March 26, 2014 Share #10 Posted March 26, 2014 I will make a bold prediction that the M9 will in time make a come back given its unique sensor and those who have lightly used ones will be sitting pretty. Similar to the nikon coolscans... A Leica Store LA saleperson has said they get requests for the M9 regularly, and many that requested it do not know about the Leica M-E. The M9 appears on it's way to reaching cult status.
A miller Posted March 26, 2014 Share #11 Posted March 26, 2014 Indeed, the SOHO Leica store indicated the same...
jcraf Posted March 26, 2014 Share #12 Posted March 26, 2014 That possibly means that the current MM will reach cult status (as if it hadn't already) when, and if, the M240 based mono is released. As an aside, I was in London buying a lovely used MP today (as you do) and the venerable gent who owns the dealership concerned indicated that the MM is his best selling new Leica........ A miller Posted March 26, 2014 Share #13 Posted March 26, 2014 Hi John = congrats on your new purchase. That MP is one hell of a camera!
jcraf Posted March 26, 2014 Share #14 Posted March 26, 2014 Thanks Adam. I had one in black paint way back when they were first launched in 2003, pre-ordered from the same dealer. Lots of water under the bridge since then.......... This one is chrome, 0.58, mint boxed and came with the little rewind crank (again, mint boxed). It has interesting provenance too, to add to the interest. As you say, a helluva camera!! Kind regards
Jaybob Posted March 26, 2014 Share #15 Posted March 26, 2014 In the proper hands, the M9 (or the M8 for that matter) is a unique and tremendous tool. Just because new models have been released, doesn't mean anybody has to buy one. The consumer is where the digital "disease" is hosted, not the cameras themselves. "Resale" value shouldn't determine whether you like it now.
250swb Posted March 27, 2014 Share #16 Posted March 27, 2014 NOT so with my MP's or even M7. I suppose your perspective on history depends when you bought your MP and M7, but it can't have been long ago, or your memory fails you. The introduction of the MP immediately led to a big price fall in the M6 as people traded them in for the new model. The M7 also led to a fall in M6 prices when that was released, so BOTH your film cameras helped permanently devalue many other peoples cameras overnight. Prices and desirability never recovered as the MP is still seen as being 'above' the M6 in the product range (even though the M6 is no longer available they did once exist side by side, so it is a genuine comparison). So while you are criticising the 'digital disease' it may also be worth considering human nature, and in days gone bye when a new style stone axe became available every caveman would want the new one, and all the old ones would be devalued. Should Leica introduce an MP-2 (admittedly little chance of that) your MP value will plummet, and the circle would be complete. Steve
pgk Posted March 28, 2014 Share #17 Posted March 28, 2014 "Resale" value shouldn't determine whether you like it now. Personally speaking I quite like the tail off in resale values which means that an older digital model is worth a reasonable amount when a newer but used model has dropped in price making the trade up cheaper:). Of course if you are buying new this isn't what you might want to hear but every cloud has a silver lining as is said.
Jaybob Posted March 29, 2014 Share #18 Posted March 29, 2014 Resale value of a camera you already own shouldn't determine whether you like it now, is probably more accurate. Clean used M9's to be had for $3400 (+/- $250) in the early spring of 2014 is awesome if you're in the market to buy an M9.
