andybarton Posted March 3, 2014 Share #8 Posted March 3, 2014 Lost loads of film from the trip due to excessive X-ray scanning... You must have been through an extraordinary number of very poorly set up x ray scanners, or put your film in the hold. Or been very unlucky indeed. I have never had any damage to any film, including Neopan 1600, from multiple scans in airports in Europe.
trogir13 Posted March 4, 2014 Author Share #9 Posted March 4, 2014 You must have been through an extraordinary number of very poorly set up x ray scanners, or put your film in the hold. Or been very unlucky indeed. I have never had any damage to any film, including Neopan 1600, from multiple scans in airports in Europe. All my carry-on film encountered the "monster scanner" (that is usually downstairs for checked luggage) 3 times in Cancun customs due to missing a flight. And then 4-5 regular carry-on scanners throughout the trip prior to getting home. Its been so long since I traveled internationally with film that I forgot the take the lead bags I have from back in the day. Although I do remember traveling a round trip across the pond with regular scans on both sides and never having a problem - but I have read that you should never put film in checked bags do to that "monster" downstairs - especially after 911. But to my surprise you cannot get out of Cancun customs without going through it on the floor. Not one agent was willing to hand-check - as i tried desperately when seeing the "monster". hamey Posted March 4, 2014 Share #10 Posted March 4, 2014 Same as Andy, never had any trouble with fogging film. Last overseas trip my undevolped slide films went through the X-Ray 10 times with no ill effect. Keep your film with you at all times, it's just as important as your Camera. Ken. My film is always on me - I have never checked film - just weird - thats all I can image it was - the large machine. I have seen warnings to never check your film because of the machine below. But in Cancun - everything you have must go through it as its on the exit level of customs. Or I can just blame Fuji.
Stealth3kpl Posted March 4, 2014 Share #12 Posted March 4, 2014 Can you scan some and post the results. I'd be interested to see. On a recent visit to Cuba, I left a roll of AgfaPlus 200 in my shorts pocket in my hold luggage. It was unaffected by X-ray at Havana, and possibly both Paris and Manchester. Zoran, there is (or until recently used to be) a similar arrangement at Bogotá: a big mama x-ray that unlucky individuals, if they pressed a mandatory button and got a red light, had to send all their bags through before exiting customs. Several times I avoided ruining my film by sticking it all in my pockets, or even the pockets of my jacket, as none of the customs officials seemed that interested in scanning anything but the bags. In Cancun - everything you have has to go through the monster. Then after that, you do the red arrow on the screen which then sends out on your way or to a complete "luggage inspection by hand" procedure - I of course got that as well - that kinda trip.
