adrianw Posted February 9, 2014 Share #1 Posted February 9, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have just picked up my M after almost a year of waiting for a chrome one. Very excited, I did all the setup stuff and was pleased with LV and EVF, focusing etc on my vintage f2/50. All went well until I tried other lenses. I now get no reaction to f2/35 or to 2 CV lenses (75 and 21mm). The shutter is locked and pressing LV gets "Attention. No lens connected" including on the Summicron that worked at first. I must have done something dreadfully wrong. any ideas?
Advertisement Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 Hi adrianw, Take a look here new M 240. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
MarkP Posted February 9, 2014 Share #2 Posted February 9, 2014 How frustrating. Remove and replace the battery. Check what lens detection setting you are using in the menu, or try manually to select the lens. Are your lenses 6-bit coded? For reasons unknown to me the camera intermittently doesn't seem to like it when it can't find coding.
adrianw Posted February 9, 2014 Author Share #3 Posted February 9, 2014 Thanks Mark. Removed and replaced the battery and the f2/50 now works! None of my lenses are coded, but I set them all manually as per the settings that were published a while ago and which worked fine on my M9. Thanks again. MarkP Posted February 9, 2014 Share #4 Posted February 9, 2014 Glad to help. Remember that these cameras are just little computers with a lens out front. So the first option for problems is the same as for your computer - unplug and restart! Sorry, I didn't follow you - did you you mean that you coded the lenses manually or that you set the M240 manually for each lens? I've noted that manually coded lenses that suited the M9 don't always work on the M240.
adrianw Posted February 9, 2014 Author Share #5 Posted February 9, 2014 That worked with the 50 and 35mm Leica lenses. I put on the CV 21mm (setting the lens manually) and LV worked for a second and then I got the same message - ie no lens. I took out the battery and the same thing happened. I then tried the CV 75mm and I only got the message, ie no LV for any time at all, I set the lens manually again and turned the camera off and removed and replaced the battery, but no change. it seems it will work only with Leica lenses and not the Voigtlander ones. adrianw Posted February 9, 2014 Author Share #6 Posted February 9, 2014 Sorry. I didn't get the query about coding before I replied. I got a Match Technical Coder Kit but the M( did not recognize any of it, so I set the lens on the camera.
MarkP Posted February 9, 2014 Share #7 Posted February 9, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Proves my point that it's temperamental with non coded lenses. I also have the Match kit and it's a bit hit and miss. The coding needs to be that much more precise on the M240. With some of the lenses I don't think the 6-bit coding detector is properly covered - the LTM adapters certainly don't. Annoying, isnt it?
CVickery Posted February 9, 2014 Share #8 Posted February 9, 2014 Your lenses are screw mount and probably have the Type 1 adapter. The cut out on the adapter prevents the camera using the 6-bit reader from sensing the lens, so it won't let you use LV. If you switch to a Type 2 adapter you'll be able to use LV fine. adrianw Posted February 9, 2014 Author Share #9 Posted February 9, 2014 More than just annoying. Especially after the long wait. I don't get it that I have not read of any similar problems. Unless this has all made me lose my mind, none of the lenses I am trying had screw mounts. The 2 which the camera will not recognize are CV lenses that came with M mounts. The 2 Summicrons, which do work, are original bayonet M mounts. Bizarrely, it all works fine with a Novoflex adaptor mounted to a Canon FD 80-200 L lens. I have live view and both 5x and 10x magnification. It seems it does not accept the CV lenses at all. someone else must have some of these lenses. MarkP Posted February 9, 2014 Share #11 Posted February 9, 2014 Try turning the lens detection to off and them mount the CV lenses. I was just about to suggest that - you beat me to it.
ttheinz Posted February 9, 2014 Share #12 Posted February 9, 2014 I had the same issue. I removed my "manual" coding on my lens mounts (a little rubbing alcohol on a q tip) and all my lenses worked fine. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
adrianw Posted February 9, 2014 Author Share #13 Posted February 9, 2014 Before I moved the lens detection to off I removed the marks I had put on the mount of the lenses to try to do an amateurish coding (which never worked on the M9 anyway) and they now work perfectly. Do I leave the lens detection on off all the time now, that is just ignore it completely? thanks to all for your help and assistance.
ttheinz Posted February 9, 2014 Share #14 Posted February 9, 2014 You can set the lenses manually in the menu or turn it off, your preference. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
adrianw Posted February 9, 2014 Author Share #15 Posted February 9, 2014 Thank you all. I had some idea that setting the lenses manually on the camera helped with the quality of the resultant shot. Eg my 75mm CV produces much better results if I select a 75mm lens on the menu. If I was deluding myself with this, it seems the only residual benefit would be in knowing what lens one used from the information stored in Lightroom. Correct? or do you get better results by choosing a compatible lens?
jaapv Posted February 9, 2014 Share #16 Posted February 9, 2014 Might I suggest to get your lenses coded properly? There are third-party repairshops offering this service at a modest fee. Btw, corrections for lenses longer than 35 mm are minimal to nil. The only advantage is getting the focal length into exif.
colonel Posted February 9, 2014 Share #17 Posted February 9, 2014 Can I suggest you check firmware and see if updated to latest version. Rgds

This is the issue that I thought you were having: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m-type-240/307683-live-view-evf-fail-adaptor.html It would appear that either your CV lenses are letting light get to the 6-bit reader or the 6-bit reader is defective. Since other lenses/adapters seem to work I would suspect an issue with the lenses.
jdlaing Posted February 9, 2014 Share #19 Posted February 9, 2014 Also, when you use non coded lenses, the Lens Detection must be manually set or turned off. The lens code reader in the M is much more finicky that the M-9. Read the note on Page 162 of the manual.
Torgian Posted February 9, 2014 Share #20 Posted February 9, 2014 I've always used the manual setting for my Zeiss 35mm lens.
