250swb Posted February 13, 2014 Share #21 Posted February 13, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Although I do like Sean Reid's review's the Flash setup isn't great. Concerns about stealing content may be overridden by getting far more subscribers to counter any drop in revenue due to illegal distribution. Many companies in the digital age have cottoned onto the advantages of quantity overriding exclusivity. When Google bought Nik and bundled all their products for a fraction of the original price they ensured that nearly any keen photographer could afford it, so stole the market. They still earn the same (maybe more) from it because far more people are buying it. So in a world where the likes of Sean Reid is almost unique and the hunger for 'camera info' is vast I think he could cut the strings and move from Flash without any danger. Advertisement Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 Hi 250swb, Take a look here Reid Reviews. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wattsy Posted February 13, 2014 Share #22 Posted February 13, 2014 Acquaintances in hacking circles advise me that Flash only protects against casual theft and is easy to circumvent for the expert. I don't have any acquaintances in hacking circles but I have used Flash on and off (less so nowadays) since it was called FutureSplash (before Macromedia bought it, let alone Adobe) and your point is only trivially correct. "Expert" or not, a committed copyright infringer would find it far easier to subscribe to the website and simply transcribe the contents for distribution than to mess around with the .swf files and try and extract the copy. Frankly, that possibility has always been the weakness of Sean Reid's security and to the extent that I don't believe anyone is out there illegally distributing the contents of Reid Reviews (haven't yet met anyone down the market whispering "Oi mate, wanna buy Reid Reviews for a tenner") I think the Flash interface has always been rather pointless and unnecessary off-putting. There are far more elegant solutions involving password protected pages and/or 'secure' PDFs, both of which would work on an iPad. Maybe Sean should have a word with Digilloyd? IkarusJohn Posted February 13, 2014 Share #23 Posted February 13, 2014 I did suggest secured PDF to him, as it is something I use a bit. To be honest, I make my living from the written word, and I assume everything has the potential to be copied. It's actually flattery, and helps to disseminate my work. The best security is to be faster and better than anyone else. John
wellfleet Posted February 19, 2016 Share #24 Posted February 19, 2016 I received this from Sean Reid of ReidReviews today. "Today we introduced a major re-design of the Reid Reviews web site which is based on Html 5. It can be read on computers and many mobile devices (including the Apple iPad). The visual design is all new, the site is much faster, a search function is now available and larger images are sent to Retina and other high-resolution devices. To date forty of the, roughly, 390 articles I've written are available on the new site and more will be added each week (sometimes each day). That includes all reviews I've done from the Leica SL forward. The rest are still available on the Flash site. The five most recent articles I've published have larger images available for Retina/High Res. devices and all new content published will have those as well. Please note that the search function covers only the material on the new site. Eventually, of course, that will be every article on the site. But, right now, that's forty articles (the newest reviews and all the essays). The new site is well supported on Safari, Firefox and Windows Explorer. Chrome is also supported for Windows and Chromebook users. For Mac users, Chrome may or may not work depending on the device one is using. We're still refining Chrome support for Macs. The site has been beta tested by many people at this point and the only issue we're still working on (aside from the Chrome problem with some Macs) is getting our mobile site home page to size and zoom correctly on iPhones. That said, testers have reported that the site works quite well on iPhones nonetheless. I can certainly navigate the new site easily even using an iPhone 4S.I still recommend using a computer with a calibrated monitor for critical reading of the site but now one can read it on a wide variety of devices. Beta testers have been reading it in parks, on trains to work, in coffee shops, etc.Particular attention was paid to making sure the new site works well on iPads and I think it looks expecially good on Retina iPads. There are six html viewer options: You can see them here: http://www.reidreviews.com/viewerchoice.jpgI hope you enjoy it and thank you, once again, to the many subscribers who helped to beta test this site. I'm very grateful for that help."

ayewing Posted February 19, 2016 Share #26 Posted February 19, 2016 Sean Reid's website has undergone a transformation. He is not using flash but has a HMTL based site now. It works well on my Windows 10 desktop and on my 12" Macbook which has a retina screen. I have not tried it on a tablet yet.
wellfleet Posted February 19, 2016 Share #27 Posted February 19, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have not tried it on a tablet yet. It works extremely well on my iPad Mini 4.They're still working on the Home page scaling for mobile devices, but the article pages scale perfectly. If you notice a problem let Sean know, as they're still working on the new site.
papimuzo Posted February 21, 2016 Share #28 Posted February 21, 2016 Yes Sean Reid has updated his site Review, now in HTML 5 and the result deserves a look at it. It is usable for Windows machines, Apple machines, and a large number of mobile models. If not perfect (something is?) it is a big improvement. Have a look. Rmk: I'm not in relation with Sean Reid, only a usual subscriber.
IWC Doppel Posted March 1, 2016 Author Share #29 Posted March 1, 2016 Will he prove a reduction for renewal, and lost old subscribers ? It's okay for the first read, but not great when you are paying the same having read all you wanted to by the annual renewal
