Till now we had only one single day with snow. So we went out hunting for a couple of hours. We were quite busy because of manifold motifs. This was one last sight before turning home.

Paul,

thanks for your looking into this matter: you are right feel the same about the first one. ith B&W I tend to prefer warmer tones in most cases. B&W always an abstraction, therefore warmer tones are bringing the subject nearer towards the viewer. But this is only my personal opinion.

Billo,

thanks for the clear statement.

Really hard to choose!... I am usually a fan of B/W, but the colors in this shot are so soft and subtle, maybe bringing a little more "life" to the picture to use in an album!

But if I wanted to frame and hang, I believe the B/W would look better!...

Henry,

3 D effect is a good term, you are right about this. I'll keep this in mind. Thanks for your support.

Giorgio,

nice to have your comment. This is only an ordinary scene and people coming by might have thought what is there to be photographed. But I am happy that you even prefer the soft color version. This version is a mirror to these non spectacular but subtle beauty our region has to offer. Thanks a lot for your comment.

Louis,

thanks for your support in terms of monochrome colors. You are confirming what what I was thinking when rendering.. It means a lot when one is geting so much response to a simple picture.

Stuart,

yes, I know where the point at issue is. Thanks for sticking to the measn of reduction.

Karl, very interestin. Also you are prefering the color version. Indeed it is bringing out the real impression better. Abstraction in B&W is possible but not essential here. Thanks for sharing the discussion.

Hi Iduna - These are both really lovely pictures, each having a different mood. The B&W has strong contrast, which conveys in my eyes a somewhat creepy mood, which is cool. The color version is more soothing. I wouldn't mind seeing what a little less blue (and a little more yellow) would do in the WB. Nice work!

Beautiful! Normally I would choose b-w, but this scene looks so good in color. Maybe the b-w would be my choice if it was treated to a slight reduction in contrast, or maybe a bit more tone in the white snow....hard to say without a bit of experimenting. I really hope you don't mind....Of course, this assumes we have matched monitors; what looks good on mine, may look terrible on yours, and it's just a personal choice. Please forgive my meddling.

Larry

A.Miller,

this is a good idea, infact I was hopeful to get some idea of refining the B&W version. I will try it out and see whether I get a more satisfying result. Many thanks.

Larry,

yes, I got what you mean. As A.Miller already mentioned the contrast in the B&W is probably too hard so I am gratefule you posted the softened version. I was searching for a better solution in order to keep up the mood of the color version. your advice is very helpful here. Many thanks for looking into the matter.

Thanks for your kind reply. It's a slippery slope when taking someone's image and applying changes, without asking first.

Offered tongue-in-cheek: I sometimes wish we could add a special, temporary symbol by our thread to let others know that either (4 symbols needed):

a. Constructive criticism of my image is encouraged for this photo. I know it could be

improved. Can you help?

b. Constructive changes are welcome for this photo. I know it could be better. Please post your version.

c. I like my image as is, but I understand you may have great advice for improvement.

You constructive advice is always welcome, but please do not alter the image.

d. Here's my perfect image. Please don't even hint that it may be less than perfect. ;-)

Larry

"Improving" another photographer's image without permission.

This is something that has really bothered me since first I started to become involved with LUF and saw it happening.

IMHO it is the height of rudeness and crass behaviour to touch another photographer's work without first seeking and gaining their permission to do so.

Such an unsolicited action is taking extraordinary liberties with something that is the creative property of another photographer/artist.

Honestly would anyone even consider walking into the studio of an painter/artist, picking up a brush and helpfully "improving" the painting on their easel....I seriously doubt it, so what is the difference?

Does a photograph online have less validity than a painting? And if so why.....because it is a photograph or because it is online, or do you do it just because you can?

Iduna,

Both your images are lovely and both versions have something going for them.

Since you ask us to choose I would select the b&w treatment as b&w is always

my favourite, that is what it comes down to, personal preference.

Iduna,

While both versions are excellent, I have to lean toward the first one with the colder tones that match the weather. The b&w toned more warm has the more accurate snow tones.

Larry,

this is a good suggestion of yours, this 4-star schedule. I also would like to have some such system.

That is the issue, that we are discussing images. I for my part do not mind if my images are subject to some "improvements". By the way, who wants to create an archive with these highly compressed files here in the forum. It will be now fun in terms of quality for printouts etc. Everyone that releases photos from his own desktop via internet should be aware that this will never leave the internet nor it being safe there. This lesson should have been learnt in the recent wellknown debate.

Dee,

many thanks for joining the discussion and having made your personal choice for B&W. I know that you are convinced of the abstraction of B&W. I makes me glad that you lik my image then.

Stefan,

thanks a lot for your support of the B&W contrasty version. It is interesting that some pictures are working in several different tonings.

Hello Iduna.

Very nice winter shot . Good composition, subject matter. My preference is the colour version.

As in this photo the soft winter colours are almost B/W . The difference between the tree bark and it's snow on one side. Also I have decided lately. To put colour photo's together in one posting ,Therefore it makes it easier for the viewer to pick the one they like

.Greetings: John Basso.
