What would you do?

Since I got my M, it has really shown up my Elmar 50mm. A real lack of contrast

and unable to cope with sunlight (not very technical but the best way I can describe

it). I sent it away, through my local dealer, to Solms and they have come back with

an estimate which is a good deal more than I want to spend on it. In the meantime

I bought an Elmar M and am really very happy with it. The Elmar is now back with

me and I am just not sure what to do with it. My dealer has suggested that I put

it on the 'bay of e'.

Hence my question, what would you do?

If you need the dosh, sell. Won't buy you much though.

If it were me, I'd keep,it. I've always regretted selling Leica stuff. My photographic life story is littered with such regrets.....

David,

Why not put it up for sale here where informed members will know about the lens version, where members may be looking for the lower contrast version of the 50 Elmar and where you'll help a bit with the forum's running costs.:)

On the other hand you could have bought a bigger/better lens hood for your f/2.8 and increased the picture contrast in post processing. That would've been cheap, easy, and effective.

I'd keep it, low contrast may be everything you need one day, a lot of people are finding a lot of use from the older lenses on a digital camera, less of a digital look, hence the recent price rises of Summarit's, Summitar's, old Summicron's, and yes, old Elmar's. I think you have a baby and bathwater situation.

James, it's a 2.8 collapsible with specs from the 60s I believe.

I have the same lens. The f3.5 Elmar is better (same as the LTM Red Scale lens).

As you have the new version, I'd sell it. If it's in good condition you should get about £250 for it on the bay (dealers sell them for about £300).
