jbl Posted January 27, 2014 Share #1 Posted January 27, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Has anyone figured out a way to take the CE sticker off the bottom of the black paint M? In the past, I've used acetone to take it off the M9 and MM because I can't stand the look of it marring the bottom, but acetone with black paint seems like a bad idea. -jbl

Peel it slowly and steadily, and most of it will come off. The residue that's left will gradually lift off if you simply use the sticker you just took off to do it. I've had success doing this a number of times and it all comes off. If any little bit remains, use your thumb to rub it off.
pico Posted January 27, 2014 Share #3 Posted January 27, 2014 Remove the plate. Use a hair dryer to warm it well. Peel off. If residue is left, then use Goo Gone. It will come right off.
marknorton Posted January 27, 2014 Share #4 Posted January 27, 2014 You're right not to use Acetone which is much too aggressive. I use label removing solvent which you can buy from the likes of Staples. Just saturate the label after removing the plastic film, let it soak in and ease it off with your finger nail. george + Posted January 28, 2014 Share #5 Posted January 28, 2014 You can peel it off. Very slowly. And finger rub off the remnants. A hairdryer probably helps. I never needed chemicals.
jbl Posted January 28, 2014 Author Share #6 Posted January 28, 2014 Thanks, everyone. I decided to go chrome, so I’ll just do the acetone thing :-). -jbl

wlaidlaw Posted January 28, 2014 Share #9 Posted January 28, 2014 Zippo Lighter fluid will remove residual glue/tackiness without affecting paintwork. We use it on our classic cars, after they have had a competition number white disc stuck onto the doors. When you remove these, you are often left with a rim of mixed adhesive and road dirt around where the roundel was stuck. I also concur with Pico, softening the adhesive first with a hair dryer or hot air gun, makes removing any self-adhesive sticker/panel/notice/roundel much easier. I have seen horror stories, where people who have had their classic autos, particularly those with alloy doors, poorly repainted without using etching primer, pull large strips of the paintwork right off, leaving bare metal, when they remove the roundels too casually - Schadenfreude Wilson
marknorton Posted January 28, 2014 Share #10 Posted January 28, 2014 I would still advise against Acetone - the inside of the bottom plate is painted and the Acetone could happily strip that off. As I say, label removing solvent if your attempt to remove the label fail. Keep in mind too that excessive abrasion will mark the chrome and be visible in some lights. Mark, Zippo lighter fluid is a mixture of mid molecular weight alkanes (octane and others), just like goo remover. These are fairly inert/inactive chemicals, compared with the ketones like acetone. Zippo lighter fluid is considerably cheaper than goo remover and much easier to find. It is also good for removing sticking plaster residue from your skin, although it lacks the lanolin of commercial plaster remover, which replaces skin oils removed by the solvent. 250swb Posted January 28, 2014 Share #13 Posted January 28, 2014 For the glue used on those stickers simple white spirit will shift it without affecting the paint. The general rule of thumb is that the paint finish is a modern acrylic, and acetone or cellulose are a component of the paint, so shouldn't be used to remove glue. Lighter fuel, white spirit, turpentine substitute, meths, etc. are petroleum based which isn't used in these modern finishes, so its OK to use it to remove glue. What all solvents can do is remove the layer of skin oils that build up on the paint, leaving a temporary matt area, but it soon shines up again. jbl Posted January 29, 2014 Author Share #16 Posted January 29, 2014 Thanks, Bill :-). I got the Chrome M today and found that the CE sticker came off much easier than on the M9. I was able to just peel it off and it left just a little residue behind. I removed that with acetone in a few seconds. Everything looks great. Thanks! -jbl

jbl Posted January 29, 2014 Author Share #18 Posted January 29, 2014 On a $7,000 camera, I’m willing to pay for overnight. Now the only question is whether to get the EVF or not… I’ve taken ten photos with it. All are total crap, but the thing appears to be usable indoors at night (i.e., the color isn’t totally garbage). That on its own is worth it. The shutter noise is soooo much better too. -jbl
Bill W Posted January 29, 2014 Share #19 Posted January 29, 2014 There is minimal shutter noise but of course shutter noise has never been an issue with me unless I wear my hearing aids.
