Leica M (digital) vs. Leica MP (film)

I have owned my first digital M for the past two months. I am still getting comfortable with an all digital workflow and some of the early choices I made with those images were pretty experimental and not always successful. But none the less, I thought I'd share a little comparison between my M and MP images...

Impressive work on each. It's not an either /or. I agree with Jaap here.

A couple of thoughts.

1/ Isn't it great to be able to choose between colour / b&W without changing films or having to carry 2 bodies :)

2/ Some of the earlier images in the M series seem to have grain added in post? Later images seem more assured in accepting what the M sensor offers.

But I like them all.... thanks for sharing.

Yes. While all of them have some grain added, some of the earlier ones clearly have too much and end up a bit harsh, in my view. I still see film, so I like a little grain as it makes the images feel a little more natural and less clinical. But I suppose my approach to this will evolve some over time.

I put a bit of grain/noise (and I don't necessarily mean grit) back into most of my photographs.

It does give them that more organic texture as I really don't like that clean shot-on-video look, and very white areas in print do need some sort of 'filler' or they just look like white holes on the paper. A bit like I prefer film to video (or that dreadful and surreal HFR).

I use either just enough Gausian noise in PS to add some texture to the white areas or film emulation in SFX. I must say that with the latter I do quite like the Agfa film emulations which are just a little gentler and less contrasty than the others.

Totally agree Mark. I, too, find some of the other SFX film emulations a bit over the top. My current favourite, if I use any, is the Agfa APX Pro 100 one.

Andy

Thanks for posting some great portfolios. Very interesting to me as I've just added a film M (a used M7) to my M240 and MM. Never thought I'd shoot a film M camera again, but having done so for years the itch never goes away, and is only fuelled by seeing great film stuff on this forum!

What do you use to scan your negs?

Regards

The Egypt set is a mix of poor lab scans on a CD done in Hungary, and some that I did on a Hassleblad Flextight and small Plustek 8100 when I got back to the States. I used to own a Nikon 9000 and just ordered a new Plustek OpticFilm 120.
