flyalf Posted January 23, 2014 Share #1 Posted January 23, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just tried both M and M9 in -15 down to -21C. Both cameras had fully charged batteries and were kept in trunk of car overnight in temp between -15 down to -21C (yeah, this travel was in rural area, so no theft risk). I then went for a hike / photo shoot-out for 5 hrs: My conclusion: M handles the medium low temp down to -21C without problems, M9 can hardly be used. My M9 took only 5 exposures and then went dead. No reaction when switching on/off. When removing and inserting same battery it woke, but the following exposure were not recorded on card . I took 90 exposures during the 5 hrs with the M, most with LV (tripod work). I had no problems and when finishing the battery info showed 85% remaining. Quite good ! Advertisement Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 Hi flyalf, Take a look here M versus M9 in moderate cold winter. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
menos I M6 Posted January 24, 2014 Share #2 Posted January 24, 2014 Did you compare the behaviour also, when using fresh, warm spare batteries between the two cameras? I would be interested, if the issue was just battery related (I suppose) or camera related.
xrogers Posted January 24, 2014 Share #3 Posted January 24, 2014 Thanks for this info, good news on the M performance. I've used my M9 regularly in the cold, and found the same poor performance when I use an older battery. With a new fully charged battery, my M9 works fine -15 to -20 C (last month I shot at least 50-60 shots over a couple hours at these temps and still had over 50% charge left). If your M9 battery is more than a couple years old, I'd suspect it is getting a little tired (although I've never started winter shooting with an overnight deep freeze, and that could certainly make a difference). Until later, Clyde

Sorry, I did not compare with new batteries since my fingers at that time stopped working . Also the M9 batteries are more than 2 years old, so they are perhaps a bit degraded? ns_ng Posted January 25, 2014 Share #5 Posted January 25, 2014 Last December when I was in Inner Mongolia, one morning the temperature dropped to as low as -20 to -25C. I had both the M240 and M8 with me. The M240 performed well for over 2 hours, but locked up towards the end-of the shooting session. But battery was still showing over 50%. I used the EVF for many of the shots as I was using my WATE and a couple of R lenses. At these temperatures, the 35-70 R VE focusing and zooming became very stiff. The lubricant might be frozen. However, the focusing of the 180 Apo-Elmarit R remained smooth. No issue with the M lenses. The M8 did not fare well. It stopped working after about 20 minutes, despite indicating the battery was at full charged. wogg Posted January 30, 2014 Share #6 Posted January 30, 2014 I've had my M out for a least an hour each day in -5 to -10C weather here in our southern "Snowpocalypse". I've had no issues, and battery life has been great. I only used live view once, not some something I generally do. The only problem I had was the 2 pounds of gorgeous metal heat sink sucking the heat from my face.
jaapv Posted January 30, 2014 Share #7 Posted January 30, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) No problems skiing out in -15 with the M in an exposed bum bag (the bag exposed...) It did not falter.
flyalf Posted February 4, 2014 Author Share #8 Posted February 4, 2014 Back from roadtrip. Still very satisfied with M (and M9 in -15C and warmer). I have however noticed one issue with M and M9 in cold weather: There seems to be produced much, much more dust at sensor. I dont know where this comes from, if its from change of lenses or produced by shutter. Can it be that the cold makes the shutter "flake" of mini-particles? Also quite irritating the dust particles move around from exposure to exposure, so I cannot sync dust removal in LR . Still, a great camera for winter usage. If only the menu buttons could be larger/more bumpy to operate with gloves... Well if the sheeps can take the cold so can I and my M :p 2014_01_Northways-66 by fotoalf, on Flickr A few more photos from cold trip: 2014_Jan_Northways - a set on Flickr
