Landberg Posted January 21, 2014 Share #1 Posted January 21, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi! My Leica M5 just started to make squeaking sound when focusing. I was out for a while when it was very cold, could that be the reason? i Located the squeaking sound from the little focusing arm that adjust the focus in the viewfinder. What can i do? Please help me, my stealthy ninja has turned in to a loud canary bird!

jerzy Posted January 21, 2014 Share #2 Posted January 21, 2014 Hi,take the lens off and push the focusing lever with your finger. Does it still produce the peculiar sound then? If yes, than the camera deserved CLA.If there is no noise than put the lens again on the camera. If the noise comes again than this is from focusing monut of the lens, again CLA on the focusing mount, pretty simple thing.Yes, low tempreture could speed up occurance of the effect. br jerzy
Landberg Posted January 21, 2014 Author Share #3 Posted January 21, 2014 Yeah it makes the sound even with out the lens. It was CLAd seven months ago. DOH!
aesop Posted January 21, 2014 Share #4 Posted January 21, 2014 Yeah it makes the sound even with out the lens. It was CLAd seven months ago. DOH! ...I would contact the 'CLA person' for a restorative touch-up and insist on a quick turnaround.

aesop Posted January 22, 2014 Share #9 Posted January 22, 2014 Is it bad for the camera to be used while it's squeaking? ...personally, I wouldn't - the squeaking is the "sound of friction" (albeit to a very small degree), and it is not a good thing. Guest Mr. B Posted January 22, 2014 Share #10 Posted January 22, 2014 Is it bad for the camera to be used while it's squeaking? The same could be said for shoes. Mr. B
250swb Posted January 22, 2014 Share #11 Posted January 22, 2014 If it squeaks it isn't dead yet, so carry on using it. You will probably find all the focus arm needs is a tiny bit of lube run into the pivot, it is a substantial part and doesn't normally need lots of grease because the materials for the bushes are self lubricating. earleygallery Posted January 22, 2014 Share #12 Posted January 22, 2014 I'd carry on using it, a little squeak isn't going to harm anyone! I might even attempt to drop a tiny tiny speck of oil on the part with a toothpick, if I was pretty sure that's where the noise was coming from - but do so at your own risk of course!! But don't do this if you are going to return it to whoever did the CLA. As you didn't have the CLA done yourself, I'd be sceptical as to whether it was done at all.....
