mirekti Posted January 28, 2014 Share #4 Posted January 28, 2014 I've just received AR-3. This is my first encounter with a cable release. The way it behaves is when I start pushing it it locks in any position I pushed it to. In order to release it I have to hit the small knob which than sets it to the default position. I have few concerns. First, how hard can I push the release cable? Can I damage the shutter button if I push too hard?

Traditionally, the idea with a cable release is to trigger the shutter deliberately but slowly. The speed with which you do it will have no impact on the mechanics of your camera. The steady but slow plunge is about avoiding vibration. For that reason, some people even use a bulb that is squeezed. My experience with using cable releases is mostly with large format cameras and the Mamiya 7II, which has particularly sedate shutters built into the lenses, meaning that it is just about the last camera where this is an issue, but if the Mamiya is on a tripod, I use a cable release anyway. At the end of the day, deliberate and slow is like chicken soup. I have friends who tell me that there is a Yiddish expression that translates as "Couldn't hurt". You can screw the knurled chrome ‘B’ release on the AR3 into the main body so that the release plunger is free to return as soon as you release the main actuator. The Leica cable release works in exactly the same way. Wilson
