artdicted Posted January 7, 2014 Share #1 Posted January 7, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) well, I did it and bought again a M8. I used to have one 2 years ago and sold it for the Fuji experience but always missed the certain "soul " of the Leica feeling. I got a very very good deal so it wasn't a huge decision But anyway, I had the M8 with an 28 mm Elmarit & a 35 mm Voigtlander Color Skopar. The ELmarit was amazing. I loved this combo. I wished sometimes it was a bit faster - like 2.0... Now I am looking for a 28 mm for the M8 and can't decide if I should take the Voigtlander Ultron 2.0 or buy again the Elmarit. I was also looking for the 35 mm Summicron but these seems a bit to close for my style of photography. Does anyone have any experience with the Ultron & Elmarit? What about the Sharpness of the lense and the color rendering?
Advertisement Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Hi artdicted, Take a look here M8 - which 28mm lense?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wda Posted January 7, 2014 Share #2 Posted January 7, 2014 I cannot help you directly, but just to say, why not trust your own judgement and go with the Elmarit lens which is outstandingly good. Only if you work mostly in very poor light do you need faster. Up the ISO to 320 or 640 without any real penalty as far as speed goes. I still use that combination, mainly for backup, and still enjoy the experience.
jip Posted January 7, 2014 Share #3 Posted January 7, 2014 I've used to use the M8 with the 28mm Ultron, it was a great lens! And still is, I've never used it on the M9 though... also I loved to used the Summicron 35mm V3 (I think the version before the king of bokeh) Here are some sample shots: First two are Ultron 28mm f2 3rd and 4th picture are Summicron 35mm V3 Welcome, dear visitor! stonearabiapix Posted January 7, 2014 Share #4 Posted January 7, 2014 The Ultron is poor at wide apertures. Sharp center with very soft corners. I have since replaced it with the Summicron, and this lens is sharp everywhere.
Loren Posted January 7, 2014 Share #5 Posted January 7, 2014 well, I did it and bought again a M8. What about the Sharpness of the lense and the color rendering? Do you have an option to rent? That is what I did in the USA. I ended up buying a used Zeiss 28mm f/2.8, but my choice was more dictated by budget. If you can afford the Elmarit and really like liked it, then maybe that should be your solution. paperman Posted January 7, 2014 Share #6 Posted January 7, 2014 I have the 28mm Elmarit-M ASPH. and I think it is terrific lens on the M8..... .....but sometimes I need a fast lens, so I will add a 40mm to get a different FOV, I'm undecided between a Summarit-C or a CV Nokton.
Jeff S Posted January 7, 2014 Share #7 Posted January 7, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I wished sometimes it was a bit faster - like 2.0... ...Now I am looking for a 28 mm... Uh, those two sentences would translate to the Summicron-M 28mm ASPH. FWIW, my favorite lens on the M8.2. Jeff
lct Posted January 7, 2014 Share #8 Posted January 7, 2014 Yes Summicron 28/2 of course or the excellent Elmarit 28/2.8 asph which is a bit more contrasty. Just tried the CV 28/2 once but it had too much focus shift for me.
artdicted Posted January 8, 2014 Author Share #9 Posted January 8, 2014 Thank u guys for your feedback . It helped me... I just ordered the Ultron and give it a try - I can give it back - so there is no risk for me. The Elmarit is fantastic - but I also love to shoot in low light - so I am not sure if the Elmarit would be the perfect match for it. My dream lens for the M8 is the 28mm Summicron, I tested it a while ago and loved it from the first second. At the moment I don't have the budget for that lense so I hope the Ultron will work fine! earleygallery Posted January 8, 2014 Share #11 Posted January 8, 2014 I'd look for a lens rather than a lense, why carry around an extra e if you don't need to?

bideford Posted January 8, 2014 Share #13 Posted January 8, 2014 Bit late to the party but I really liked the ZM Biogon 28mm f/2.8 on my M8. Very reasonable used prices from reputable dealers (although I confess I got mine on the Bay). James

plewislambert Posted January 16, 2014 Share #16 Posted January 16, 2014 I have the 28mm Elmarit-M ASPH. and I think it is terrific lens on the M8..........but sometimes I need a fast lens, so I will add a 40mm to get a different FOV, I'm undecided between a Summarit-C or a CV Nokton. Have you tried the 40mm Summicron? It works well on my M9 so ought to suit an M8 as a portrait lens say or somewhat long standard lens. I did have the Voigtlander when the 40mm was being serviced and I did not like the results as much so sold it when the Summicron came back. jevidon Posted January 18, 2014 Share #17 Posted January 18, 2014 I bought a used Canadian built Series III 28mm Elmarit with Leica CLA and lens coding for about the same price that one would pay for a 28mm CV lens. You may not be so lucky, but take your time and check around. It's a worthwhile alternative.
Everywhen Posted January 20, 2014 Share #18 Posted January 20, 2014 I'll second the Canadian Elmarit 28mm Series III.
k_g_wolf ✝ Posted January 20, 2014 Share #19 Posted January 20, 2014 Spot on finding, an incredible lens even these days - which can still be recommended. I had it for 20 years before I traded up to a SUMMICRON recently. BTW, welcome to the forum, Everywhen ... Best GEORG
