The 4.0 tele elmar is "almost APO" in performance and because the head removes, there are more options for close focus like tubes and bellows.

Focus with my .72 M6 is much easier then with M8 or M9. I now consider 90mm the limit for RF focus, so I use the longer lenses on a visoflex . With a 240, you may opt for the evf.

I have a 135 Elmar F4 that I purchased for $279 in near mint condition. The glass looks new. Whoever owned it in the past obviously did not use it much, nor have I. The focus is extremely sharp. The Elmar is the lightest of the Leica 135 lenses, and it takes the 39mm filters so it matches my other three lenses. Considering just how often this focal length gets used this is the lens I would recommend. Save your money for another lens that you will get more use out of, or an additional camera body.

In an absolute sense I would go for the APO Elmarit 180 R. But this is a lens you won't carry everywhere. Recently I chose the Tele-Elmar 135 above the 3.4/135 because of character in relation to price

Thank you so much, gents! It seems like a very clear vote for the Tele-Elmar. I think, like many of you, that it will never be my most used focal length. So even though I could pay for an APO, it seems from your posts, that money could be spent more wisely somewhere else.

It was interesting to read from Daryl´s post that the modifications during the production run, have not changed the optical quality by any significance.

Thank you, all you who have contributed. Your input is very much appreciated and helpful.

I’m surprised nobody has mentioned the Elmarit-R 2.8/135. Optically identical to the last version of the M one it is a cleaner design without the goggles. A compact ant excellent tele is of course the APO-Telyt 3.4/180. A long-time industry standard in its focal length it is still an impressive performer and although prices have risen, it still has a good price/quality ratio.

The Elmarit 135 R is a beautiful lens indeed (but I would avoid the hustle with the R-adapter myself). In my experience it is very special with backlight and it has a very nice bo-keh which makes it a very good choice for portraits and stills. Given the character I would guess that it is a Mandler design.

Thank you Jaap. I didnt know these since Im still new to Leica. I will look in to those also. Have you shot these on the M - if so what are your impressions compared to M lenses?

thank you.

Yes, I have used the ApoTelyt 180/3.4 Excellent, well balanced lens on the M. The Elmarit 135 R is a more practical alternative to the Elmarit 135 M if you plan to shoot with the EVF anyway.

....who replied to this thread. Finally I got my 135mm lens. After some time going back and forth between the APO 135 and the Tele.Elmar suggested, I suddenly, one day, stumbled on a nice specimen of the Tele-Elmar at Meister Camera in Hamburg for 399 Euros. Its very clean and nice, with only a bit of cosmetic wear and a small dent on the lens shade. The lens had a CLA in January 14. Performance is extremely good, and although I didn't have a chance to try the newest version of this focal length I am extremely pleased with the first results. pictures to come.

Thank you all, who replied to my inquriery. You´ve all been of great help to me. I think I got, what is a genuine bargain of a lens and new won courage to try some of the older Leica lenses.

I, too, support the 135mm Tele-Elmar. I am disappointed with my copy of the 135mm Elmarit which I find difficult to focus despite the goggles and which tends to some quite noticeable CA.

Another vote for the Tele Elmar. I have one of the late ones, designated Tele Elmar-M (product number 11861) which looks similar to the Apo Telyt-M, with non tapered barrel and built in telescopic hood.

Quite rare these, and optically identical to the earlier Tele Elmar. The premium they command is possibly not worth it for most, but for me the ergonomics, built-in hood, and 'modern' appearance is worth the extra. As MarkP says, any Tele Elmar is a superb performer and only just behind the Apo 135. And they are MUCH cheaper!

Same here. Fully agree. Note to self: I should use it more often.

A genuine bargain it is! If it is the latest version, that is. Quite rare for Meister too, who is not at all cheap mostly.

Its the old version. But paying 399 Euros for a newly CLA'ed lens in very good condition, that also happens to have excellent performence is a bargain in my (Leica) book :-)
