about flash

sorry about that. I mean why all user leica don't use flash?

So recommend it should be have flash for taking photo at night?

thank you,

I think there may be a number of reasons why flash isn't much of a topic on a M forum:

1) I'd hazard a guess that most M users are primarily available light shooters, and if flash is an occasional need they have a small speed-light to use on it for fill ... or more likely they also have a DSLR with a dedicated flash more suited to the task. The SF58 is quite large on the M cameras and fairly awkward.

2) Compared to 35mm DSLR Brands, flash systems for Leica cameras have traditionally been less sophisticated, or more difficult to implement ... especially off-camera.

3) M digital cameras do not have PC sync port for use of strobes. The M240 does offer a PC sync port, but it is built into the multifunctional base, so it is possible with an accessory.

4) Any lens below 28mm requires a W/A finder, or the M240 EVF, which then occupies the hot shoe where a speed-light or radio transmitter would go.

In low light, where flash is required, manual focus is difficult using a RF. but now with LV one has a better chance to achieve focus, so you may well see a new crop of M users using a flash..

I've tested my M240 using my Metz MZ 40 3i with SCA3502m4 with twin reflectors quite successfully

The Leica SF24D is small and light and integrates well with the camera when used in the hot shoe. Unfortunately it does not tilt or rotate so it is often preferable to use it off camera with a flash cord. An inexpensive alternative is to use an old thyristor flash that tilts allowing bounced flash.

The SF58 is probably the best solution but so far its size, weight and high price has put me off buying one as I do not do much flash photography.

I believe I'll get a cheap Metz 20 C-2 Amazon.com: Metz MZ 20220 20 C-2 Automatic Flash with Tilt Reflector: Camera & Photo as it would suit my needs which are really low. It is cool as it can bounce in small rooms.

I just realized it comes with the cable in the box so I just need a hot shoe adapter. Would any Nikon work fine? Any suggestions?

Huh? I don't have any trouble focussing using the rangefinder in the lowest of light. In fact, I prefer it. I've always thought one of the Leica advantages was low light focussing. I used to take pictures in recording studios where light levels are barely enough to see.

To each his own.

I use the SF-24D in TTL mode and manual exposure... and I usually drag the shutter. TTL surprisingly works very well with the M9 and the M240...M8, not so much.

not the most brilliant examples...but just to show what the M is capable with the SF-24D
