… Since you ask, it's you, erl, who heads my list of moderators who have run their course. No surprise there, I’m sure. I’m never convinced that you understand the issues in these discussions about how the forum operates and you don’t appear to read other people’s posts very carefully. None of which prevents you becoming quarrelsome and combative in your responses - just as you're being now, I would say. ...

I certainly don't see it that way at all.

I'm very disappointed that you do but more that you feel justified in disparaging a forum member who has selflessly taken on the role of moderator here during his own free time and for no personal gain. While moderators should not be above criticism they should not be expected to put up with ad hominem attacks in public which undermine them and are much more difficult for moderators to counter than forum members.

If you had a problem with the way a moderator moderates then I suggest that the appropriate route is to complain via PM to Admin rather than disparage him or her in full public view.

Pete.

As for moderators being appointed, apparently, for life, I think that’s a bad thing. There should be a turnover to help bring a different perspective from time to time to the task of moderating the forum. That’s what I mean by a bit of a shake up.

I am unaware that mods are appointed 'for life'. I am of the understanding that it is only for the time that Anreas wishes, not specified otherwise.

None of which prevents you becoming quarrelsome and combative in your responses - just as you're being now, I would say. I expect you're a wonderful human being in all other aspects of your life but, as far as I'm concerned, you are not suited to the role of moderator.

Thank you for your frankness in naming me. At least it is clear and there are no surprises there. My understanding of issues in any discussion may not be up to your intellectual level, but I generally restrict myself to intervening only when a post is reported. Rarely on my own initiative. Of course if a poster comments directly about me I am inclined to respond. As for being quarrelsome and combative, well I don't agree, but that is just my POV, as opposed to yours. However, when it comes to forum rules, unlike reading peoples posts, I am obliged to oversee, not necessarily agree. When my authority as a moderator is questioned, I make no pretense at being polite. OTOH, my opinions as an ordinary member may always be criticized, and that is not a problem with me.

As to my suitability as a moderator, or as you state, I am not suited, please address your particular dissatisfaction directly to Andeas. As I am not inclined to resign based on your view of my unsuitability, Andreas can simply terminate my position should he agree with you.

I hope that none of the existing moderators leaves their current post.

Perhaps those moved to call for their removal might like to offer positive

assistance in carrying out what is quite clearly at times a thankless

task.

Wow, what a shitstorm!!

FWIW my thoughts on the issue are that I don't see any need for Mods to close threads, unless they break the forum rules. To declare that a thread is no longer of interest is quite arrogant - if it's not of interest to anyone it will no longer attract responses and gradually get buried in the archives.

On the other hand, this is a photography forum - Barnack's bar was set up because people would often discuss OT issues which might have some common interest with other members here, not just photography related. I usually visit the Bar first as I often find something of interest there. For example, threads about Hifi, travel, motoring, mobile phone providers etc.

Now, there are many forums on the net for all sorts of subjects and if I want more in depth and varied responses on a subject I will search for an appropriate forum to join. I'd suggest that if anyone wants to debate the bad or good of Nelson Mandela that they seek a forum that specialises on the topic, you'll get far more interest - I just googled and found politics forum.org which has this thread http://www.politicsforum.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=105&t=43295 - join up and fill your debating boots!

If we think of the bar as a real bar, and the types of conversations we'd strike up with people generally in a real bar, then I don't think you can go far wrong.

If people are still upset then I can suggest some further reading;

If you have me in mind, I await the call. I would be more than happy to oblige but I have a feeling I’m in for a long wait.

I’m reluctant to draw this unhappy episode out any longer so I'm sending you a PM which may help you see it differently.

When a moderator publicly demands that names be named as erl did, I don’t see it as at all inapproriate to respond in public.

Oh dear. I thought this brouhaha was done and dusted. Surely it's time to move on, embrace the spirit of the season, take a deep breath, join hands and sing kumbaya! Don't go, Andy!

I see far too much negativity, downright nasty comments and inanities posted online, all over the internet, largely under the cover of anonymity. If posters were required to use their real names and had the courage of their convictions -- as when writing letters to the paper -- the online world would be nicer.

While I support free debate, my feeling is that the Mandela post was inappropriate. Anything that incites ill will or disharmony, especially when it deals with racial issues, is treading a fine line. Mandela himself urged unity. It's worth bearing in mind.

Be careful what you wish for! ;)

Thanks for the warning, Brian, but I'm not dissuaded.

I've joked about it but, actually, I'm quite serious about offering my time and such talents as I possess to help this forum run smoothly. I believe that more of us who enjoy the benefits of membership should be prepared to help run it. The bigger the team, the less onerous is the burden for any one individual. I'm in favour of fixed term appointments and a more frequent turnover of moderators. That can only work if more of us are prepared to take on the role.

Of course, it's up to the site owner to determine how forum moderation is organised but I can't imagine that he would be unhappy about having a larger pool of volunteers to draw from.

Thank you for your intererest in our organization. However, we are sorry to inform you, that there are no job offerings.

As a side note, please be informed, that the form of application is slightly unusual outside of career politics.

Life? They didn't murder anyone! I'd rather be a wedding photographer than take on the onerous task of moderating the endlessly repeating tripe (much of which I spout :o) of a photography forum. My hat's doffed to you all.
