And the merry-go-round of insecurities starts to turn again. Come one, come all, take the merry-go-round for a spin and let yourself believe that the object of your affection is less sparkly than someone else's. Let the paranoia build and make you believe that the Leicaman is giving gifts to others but not to you.

Or believe Leica's explanation and save yourself some unnecessary heartache.

I have been using my M240 a bit less since getting my MM. This now means that I cannot possibly keep using it, even if I update the firmware, because my camera is now inferior to the latest M240, lacking as it does the mystery upgraded component.

I did take it out today but I noticed people in London were looking at me with ill-concealed contempt, and even pity. "There he goes, the poor sod with the outdated Leica" They all somehow knew. Even my shots from today lacked something.

If anyone is interested, I am thinking of starting a self-help group for those who live with the shame of an outdated M240.

Read the whole thread for hilarious entertainment …

Uh—so that's the back story to the current incident. I already suspected something of this kind. Back then, they didn't provide a pointless firmware update for download—and got flamed. Now they do—and get flamed again.

Oh well ...

You've got it all backwards. The new component (whatever it is) can't possibly be better than the old one. In fact it is highly likely that it is inferior, probably cheaply made in China or Thailand.. Your old m(240) v.11 will be more valuable and it is the v12 owners who should be pitied.

You have a valid point. Better not commit financial suicide by upgrading my old outdated camera, without the 'new component,' to v12. That would make it worthless. An unloved and unwanted hybrid. A monster. An electronic Panda if you will, without the collectablity.

You have a point…

My M9-P was down-gradable to 1.162 before Leica kindly offered to replace it's sensor board (despite not having any crack or issues) but with an alert that the new sensor board wouldn't support 1.162 (hence why some M9s can't be down-graded). I went ahead with the replacement anyway.

This isn't unique to Leica of course; practically all hardware manufacturers tend to, over time, switch internal parts to either lower costs (and thus improve margins) or when their supplier manufacture-discontinues some component and new supplier/component needs to be found.

As long as the quality and functionality isn't degraded in any way for new and exiting cameras, I don't see why anyone should really care what Leica changes inside new Ms (240) :p

I've updated my camera & I am still experiencing regular lock-ups that require a battery pull. Am I a bit behind on the bugs or has this issue generally been fixed for most users? Workarounds anyone?

Not at all. The only work around you already know about-remove bottom plate and remove battery. PITA, yes?

...PITA, a bit, yes but mostly when a half-case is attached. I was in an interview the other day when during my 8min. portrait session, the camera did lock up. I calmly removed the half-case which had a tripod screw attached, bottom plate & battery pull with, by now, slightly sweaty hands & I could swear out of the corner of my eye, the well known (Pritzker Prize winning) Japanese architect was smiling ruefully at me, almost as if he knew exactly what was going on. Anyways, up & running again & the shot was safely in the bag after that..

.....muttering under his breath: “why did not this idiot photographer buy a Nikon?” :D

  • 2 weeks later...

On the firmware front, I was disappointed to find today, that Leica still have not sorted communication to the SF-58D flash from the M240. In fact I feel they may have made it worse. I reported to Leica in May/June that the wrong lens focal length was showing up on TTL so that a 50mm would show as a 75mm on Auto Zoom and say a 28mm as a 35mm. I was told this was a known fault and would be cured in the forthcoming FW update.

Today I find that a 50mm lens is now showing up on the flash as a 90mm and a 35mm as a 75mm on Auto Zoom. Therefore it looks to me if the change has been made in the wrong direction.

Just like my faulty new Noctilux, doesn’t anyone check these things before they release them or let them out of the factory. I have again arranged a report to Leica but got back an “out of office until 6th of January” response. Obviously it is a case of “would the last person working at Leica in 2013, please turn out the lights”.

This two weeks of vacation costs them which they then pass on to us.

Yes, that and probably 4 more weeks in this summer. And numerous other inefficiencies I'm sure. But this is all "right of the decimal point", when compared with the investment in the development of the S-system, which in view of the pace of sensor development and the boutique market, at best, is going to prove a nasty and large investment. And that, we are all paying for and will continue to do so.
