Advertisement Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 Hi IWC Doppel, Take a look here Spring into Bath, April 19th, Easter Saturday. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
MartinEB Posted April 22, 2014 Share #142 Posted April 22, 2014 Hi My thanks to David for organising, Andy for bringing "The Book" (Great editing! Ordering a copy is my next job), new and familiar faces for coming along and sharing your ideas, and all those who have put up some photos for the day. Here is my contribution. I was "learning" the 135mm apo-telyt M with the M 240 - and used the EVF, which works better for me than the rf. (I may get to a separate post on that). I also headed off down Great Pulteney Street, having visited Bath before but not sampled that area. Hope to see you all again at a future meet. Best wishes, Martin Welcome, dear visitor! dunos Posted May 2, 2014 Share #145 Posted May 2, 2014 Thank you to Gibbo for organising and thank you to everyone for making me feel welcome. I had a very enjoyable day (and caught the sun a bit as well!). Still have to process some photos but here is my favourite from the day: Dog legged by Daniel Durrans, on Flickr
Gibbo Posted May 2, 2014 Author Share #146 Posted May 2, 2014 Cheers Dan! Glad you enjoyed the day. Well, we've had time to recover from our day out and now we can start to think about the next one I'd like some input from everyone please. Bath was rather good as a venue I thought, Ace Cameras could have been a bit more inspiring. I was expecting them to be a bit more proactive rather than standing to attention as if it was an official inspection The question is, would we like to do the same venue again or a different one? Please let me know your thoughts. Also, do we want to do it this year or wait until next? I'm quite happy to get on with organising things but I would like to know what you want rather than impose my will upon you Fire away guys!
farnz Posted May 2, 2014 Share #147 Posted May 2, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Again thanks for organising a very pleasant day David and Lynn. I'm up for another meet up in your part of the world and I suggest that the seasons are important because I've found that more people tend to come along in the warmer months so perhaps consider one towards autumn (but steering clear of August bank holiday because of conflicting plans and travel complications)? I like both Bath and Bristol so I'd be happy to go back although a place with fewer grockles* would be welcome too, if convenient. terrycym Posted May 2, 2014 Share #148 Posted May 2, 2014 Isn't Wells in your local area Gibbo? Grockles??? New one one me, had to google that one.
farnz Posted May 2, 2014 Share #149 Posted May 2, 2014 … Grockles??? New one one me, had to google that one. Having been teasingly called a grockle by some Bristolian friends some years ago I also found out from Cornish friends that in Cornwall tourists are disparagingly referred to as "emmets". Pete. Jimothy Posted May 2, 2014 Share #150 Posted May 2, 2014 I'd certainly be up for doing it again. Being totally parochial it needn't be quite so far south and west next time
Dan Bachmann Posted May 3, 2014 Share #151 Posted May 3, 2014 I'm looking forward to Bristol. We've never been - it would be great to see with a local and a Leica. It's good to plan ahead for us.

MartinEB Posted May 5, 2014 Share #154 Posted May 5, 2014 Some feedback, as requested, but please don't take any of it negatively. Overall, Bath is an excellent venue and the event was a big success - so many thanks for your effort in putting it together. I came by train from London, as did several others - public transport connections / timing worked for me ( others were more affected by engineering works) Those considerations will tend to be a key factor affecting my ability to attend. Choice of date, in the middle of Easter, will tend to involve service disruptions. Yes, I agree that ACE could have been more proactive and so they didn't add anything. I also thought that the initial meeting place was a bit phased by our presence - they seemed to find our staggered arrivals, varying numbers and informal nature of our gathering hard to understand initially. And were perhaps more interested in their regular lunch business. (Their demand for a significant deposit when you made the reservation was an unwanted complication for you.) We could really have done with more space. I can see that finding a suitable venue in such a busy tourist centre is difficult - and the place you chose, immediately opposite ACE, made perfect sense at the planning stage. I don't know Bath well enough to suggest an alternative, but trying somewhere else in a similar location could turn out better. Martin
Gibbo Posted May 5, 2014 Author Share #155 Posted May 5, 2014 Martin, thanks for your input. It's always good to get input after the event. One of the problems with organising an event such as this is, how many will turn up? At one stage we had a potential 25 attendees and The Tasting Room would have been far too small. So, what do you go on? Well, I've organised three previous events, in Bristol, to which the numbers have been on a decline and the last event had three (including me and one non forum member). I took a guess at 12, taking into account those who let me know they were not coming and allowing for a number of no-shows on the day. There were 16 of us in the end. The question of the deposit had not been raised by The Tasting Room until a few days before the event and did take me by surprise. It was a bit off that they left it so late to let me know! I do understand why they did it though as we were booking half their establishment and they didn't really know us from Adam. Yes, both they and I were taken by surprise by the number of people who did turn up on the day and , in hindsight, I prefer that to being sat there with just my wife and farnz which, on previous showings, would have been just about par for the course. I had been dealing with a lady called Alison at Ace Cameras who had seemed very positive about our visit. She had informed me that she was going to try to get Leica themselves to do something to support our visit but that, if that failed, she and Ace would lay something on for us. I found out on the Thursday before our meet that she is no longer with the company but was assured that they were expecting us and ready for our visit and had liaised with Will from The Tasting Room too. It would appear they did clean the Leica cabinets. As for a suitable date for the event, well, that's also a difficult one. That is the one that requires input beforehand and in the early stages which is why I started this thread last November. I can then only work with the replies I get and, in my view, an Easter meet was welcomed by those who expressed an opinion. Not being a train traveller, it didn't occur to me that there would be a problem with the trains, nor did anyone raise the issue until the last couple of weeks. I trust you were happy with the weather. That was my most trying issue Anyway, enough post mortem, the input I really need from you now, Martin, is what do we do next. Obviously there are things to be learnt both by me and by those who want an event laid on for them. So, let's be hearing your ideas
IWC Doppel Posted May 5, 2014 Share #156 Posted May 5, 2014 If we do want to go back to Bath, I can put my thinking cap on for locations, but will need a few likes/dislikes in terms of what we are looking for. Inevitably Bath is busy and catering for big numbers for a light lunch can be difficult especially at the busiest of times. But if the criteria is set I can scope ! Swanny Swanny Posted May 30, 2014 Share #157 Posted May 30, 2014 A thought which maybe a little too much off track ? but many years ago I went on the "Comedy walk" in Bath which could well yield many 'Street' opportunities as well as a couple of pub stops and lots of laughter from memory so if going back to Bath maybe something to get views upon it took about an hr and was mid afternoon , that's assuming it's still running of course .. Outside of this idea I'm happy to run with the crowd not having attended a meet before
Jimothy Posted June 4, 2014 Share #158 Posted June 4, 2014 Swanny Swanny, you're in Lincoln so how about organizing a meet in that fine city?
Swanny Swanny Posted June 16, 2014 Share #159 Posted June 16, 2014 That could be a possibility if there's an appetite ... I can certainly think of a few places around the castle, cathedral and Bailgate area not to mention Steep Hill
