stunsworth Posted March 20, 2014 Share #682 Posted March 20, 2014 But they cannot rely upon past glories - ancient and recent - to make up for the mis-steps. They NEED to get it right. Leica seem to be doing very well at the moment. I'd say they _have_ got it right. However, it's a game that never ends, the trick is to continue to make things people want to buy. That's something that they have a track record in achieving.
AlanG Posted March 20, 2014 Share #683 Posted March 20, 2014 The Sony Nex 3N with IS zoom lens is being closed out at $300 so selling an APS for 10 times that will require a pretty special camera to appeal beyond die hard Leica enthusiasts.
larsv Posted March 20, 2014 Share #684 Posted March 20, 2014 Somebody in this thread sounds like a grumpy old man: knows better, ridicules people for their choice of camera (XV) (or computers), tells Leica they can do much better, tells people they should make up their own minds as long as they agree with him. Almost sounds like another person running quasi scientific tests on the XV (most likely a faulty sample anyway), continued Leica bashing on the side, and telling the camera should behave in a certain way because he wants it to. Rather than just stating the camera is not a fit for them, just going beyond that stating that people who bought the camera made a mistake and Leica is stupid or worse and don't have their priorities right. I like a number of Leica products and a number of Leica products don't fit the profile I'm going for. I would love to see a kind of X2 size form factor and built quality with interchangeable lenses and a (optical) viewfinder. I also have the X Pro 1 and don't like the implementation of the hybrid viewfinder. And it (at least my sample) struggles with AF in low contrast surroundings, certainly in silent mode. I used it as my main at two weddings, but was very happy I brought my M along as well. I think the XPro1 is overall a very nice camera and the lenses are just great. However, it's a game that never ends, the trick is to continue to make things people want to buy. That's something that they have a track record in achieving. I haven't seen an adequate R solution yet. With the limited supply of batteries and fast non-HC SD cards the DMR's practicality in my field conditions is increasingly questionable. Given Leica's apparent product direction the chances my DMR's replacement will be a Leica are near zero.

I think they won't give solutions (unless one likes to spend lots of money on a S and use it cropped with R lenses... not a smart idea.... ) If one thinks that a GOOD EVF (really good, not the "honest and no more" accessory for M) can be a viable solution... there can be a bit of hope in the April announcement... I feel your pain Doug, but I think any Leica 'SLR solution' is going to involve an EVF and a lens adaptor. I'd love to be proved wrong.

larsv Posted March 20, 2014 Share #694 Posted March 20, 2014 Sometimes, even grumpy old men may have valid points. Fully agree. And I find Bill usually a very sensible guy. Just don't understand his stand in this case. I don't dislike Bill, just don't understand his tenacity in the case of the XV (Apple is different, somebody needs to do it). wildlightphoto Posted March 20, 2014 Share #695 Posted March 20, 2014 Wasn't the DMR APS-C ? (I have never had it... don't know...) It has a 1.37x crop factor. I'm not interested in smaller. I feel your pain Doug, but I think any Leica 'SLR solution' is going to involve an EVF and a lens adaptor. I'd love to be proved wrong. A good EVF and an adapter don't bother me. I don't expect an SLR or a native R mount. I want an R lens solution, not necessarily an SLR solution.

The EVF on the Fuji XT1 appears to be very good according to the reviews (not seen one myself) - and it can be set to show the full frame together with a section magnified to one side. However that's a 1.5 crop camera, so not suitable for you. I'm sure the major manufacturers will come out with something suitable at some point, if only for the savings they'd make in the mirror box. Uh... thanks (I'm always amazed by my ignorance about the Leitz/Leica SLR history... ) ... aren't you thinking of Sony A7 ? Time ago I have read lot of complain about its behavior with M mount WAs... but won't be surprised of excellent results with some of those superb Teles and Zooms made for R (but confess that it's a longtime I haven't surfed the A7 thread in the forum...) If I had to replace the DMR today the Sony A7 would be my first choice. I'm not thrilled with what I've been hearing about Sony service but the camera looks very good and those who have used both the DMR and the A7 tell me the Sony's color quality is the closest they've seen to the DMR aside from medium-format digital.
