Guest Gilgamesh Posted November 10, 2013 Share #1 Posted November 10, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I was a-wondering, now the M240's have their own thread, and the MM is adrift in a sea of M9's (= I am not reading your posts), and for those of you are reading and unaware, in the majority (?) of us have all manner of issues with the M240, I was wondering, of those reading this and own both the MM & the M240 or have extensive experience of both, how has the MM performed in comparison? I have only had my brand new MM for 4 days, but what I can say, by comparison, is that I've had few problems, if any with the 240. I'm currently out on the London streets with the MM - first outing- on a glorious Autumn day. The MM has locked/frozen no fewer than 4 times, requiring battery removal. Current firmware out of the box, standard advance, battery pretty much full, card types swapped around (no effect). So although I can't comment on file comparisons (yet), what I can say is that it is a clear win for the 240 on reliability. Struggling with the amount I've paid for the MM right now!! Could be a blessing in disguise, depending on where you bought your Monochrom (a least a couple of UK dealers are discounting this camera down to £4995:eek:). Yes, I see Ffordes have an ex-demo one (I think) which is down to £4995. Right now, I wouldn't give £49.95 for mine. Shocking that our beloved camera company may be producing such high-priced lemons in the 21st century, but there we are. As I stood there on the pavement in the London sunshine, removing the Luigi half case and baseplate for the 4th time, I felt a prize idiot, especially when everyone around me was shooting away on iPhones, and cameras costing peanuts. Having owned it for only 4 days I might insist on a replacement - not sure I should have to wait for it to go back to Solms! The only saving grace is that I'm now going to have a play with a couple of hundred (hard-won) Monochrom files! Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Two authorised dealers (located not as far North) are selling new stock for that price. The reason I mention it is that it is not a good time to be paying full price for a Monochrom when there are some good discounts floating around. But £4995 is enough to drive me to drink tonight - along with the thought that I might have a lemon. Mind you, I've just processed some of the files from today. My word......! No problem at all for me with the monochrom, wonderful camera, and finally (more than two years) my M9 almost stopped spilling oil on the sensor so i am happy. I'm sure the lock up issue will get sorted one way or another. The files are amazing - can't believe what can be pulled out of them. Just at the moment though, it's a bit like that famous cigar advert of old where the Bach music starts, especially having just seen the 2 Northern dealers prices......... Camera stayed on even when switched off, if you see what I mean, with shutter speed still displayed in the VF. And it wasn't clearing the buffer either. I have reset the camera, for what that's worth. And tried provoking it with some runs of shots in C mode, and also,using discreet and soft and both. No lockup over a good 80-90 shots. I'll bet it's a card problem; mine was and it's never played up since. There are various threads on the forum that discuss this. I've had my MM nearly a year and it's never missed a beat; good luck! I think... you got me thinking now............wish I never saw this threadHow many of you guys with both the M 240 and MM go out shooting with both cameras with you either around the neck or in a bag with lenses attached and ready to go? I tend to decide in advance whether I want to use the Monochrom or M240 and take that camera for the day. If I'm going away then I may take both camera bodies, but I tend to only go out with one at a time - only occasionally I'll use both at once. Go on Neil. I am thinking the same I.e MM around the neck and M either in a shoulder bag or on the spider holster .............sure to get a reaction to that combo but not writing it for a reaction I will ask later about what lens combos Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
skinnfell Posted November 11, 2013 Share #19 Posted November 11, 2013 I have used three different monochroms. All of them locked up occasionally in S mode, (discret or standard make no difference). All of them had noise banding in C mode. This is annoying, and a shame really. I am hoping L will fix this in firmware, but who knows... If it wasn't for the magical image quality I would have got swapped them for a 240 a long time ago. I have learned to live with it. The advantages outweighs the disadvantage. (My canon 5D3 is reliable, but it is boring and uninspiring in all other respects....) Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
jcraf Posted November 11, 2013 Share #20 Posted November 11, 2013 My MM's behaviour got worse last night, and this morning it locked up twice within several mins, needing the battery out to shut it off. It also 'died' twice. Clearly a sick MM. Last night I tried everything with my SD cards, to no avail. Battery was showing around 90% charge. I did notice however, that the on/off switch seemed to have a bit of play when set to the 'off' position. Maybe significant, maybe not. Called my dealer in London first thing. So, I now have MM No2 in my hands. All credit to the dealer for a no quibble approach. Pretty essential given the price and the fact I'd only had it 4 days; I couldn't bear to have it go back to Solms. So now the new battery is charging, and my fingers and toes are crossed.
