Rick Posted November 10, 2013 Share #162 Posted November 10, 2013 Thanks for the breath of fresh air. I began to wonder if i am alone to like rangefinders in this forum. LCT I admit to getting caught up in this A7R hype. Combine that with the usual Leica BS like the EVF temp problem and the hand grip... one of which I probably won't ever own and the other I hardly ever use... and it is easy, for me anyway, to lose sight of how nice this M camera system is. Human nature, I guess. I mean really, am I ever going to want to look through an EVF and try and focus my M-RF-lenses... no matter how good Steve Huff says it is? I don't even like looking through the RX1 EVF. I don't even like looking through the M240 EVF. What makes me think I'll like the A7R? Oh yeah, I forgot, 36 mega-freaking-pixels!!! and more of that crazy ISO and dynamic range!!! I can make my photos look even more HDR looking. Since I digress, when is LR going to save us all a lot of trouble and just give us an Artificial HDR slider? I'm getting tired having to amp-up the Contrast/Saturation/Vibrance and dropping the Highlights slider ALL THE WAY TO THE LEFT. Oh, and don't forget pushing the Clarity slider ALL THE WAY TO THE RIGHT!!! That's what I'm talking about. Man, I'd love to see an AHDR (Artificial High Dynamic Range) slider in LR6. Think of all the over processed, HDR-like photos I could look at on flickr? My eyes are tired just thinking about it.
lct Posted November 10, 2013 Share #163 Posted November 10, 2013 Haha! better prepare yourself to tweak vignetting and colour shifts my friend... or to buy an MF camera. Did you see the IQ2 Phase One digital backs? 16 bit, 80MP, imagine the billboards you could print with that.
jaapv Posted November 10, 2013 Author Share #164 Posted November 10, 2013 Thanks for the breath of fresh air. I began to wonder if i am alone to like rangefinders in this forum. Can’t agree more. To me,the EVF is an auxiliary system to use my R lenses and a replacement for the external viewfinders. it is better than the Visoflex, but it should darn well work properly. i would consider an A7R, but I refuse to carry two systems any more Just the M and a Panasonic LF1 as backup, my ideal travelkit. As a rangefinder, I cannot fault the M.

k-hawinkler Posted November 10, 2013 Share #166 Posted November 10, 2013 Well, I can't post non-Leica images here but I can point to them: The GetDPI Photography Forums - View Single Post - A7 or A7r Hopefully pretty soon I can repeat that kind of shot with an unmodified R lens on a 36 MP camera! almoore Posted November 10, 2013 Share #167 Posted November 10, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) there is a simple solution i.e. switch off-switch on, and a simple workaround, i.e. disable auto switch-off and only switch the camera on when you want to use it Quite. My understanding is that the tag line for the upcoming new ad campaign is "Leica M, the camera for the indecisive moment..."
lct Posted November 10, 2013 Share #168 Posted November 10, 2013 Just disable sleep mode and the camera will be responsive as it should be. Don't forget to turn the carmera off after shootings though to avoid battery drain even if you're living or travelling in fresh countries.
Guest Gilgamesh Posted November 10, 2013 Share #169 Posted November 10, 2013 Lock-up issues are not exclusively confined to temp' issues Mine seems to loathe taking images whilst in LiveView, either by design or in error. It oft' gives me 5x or 10x and even using the normal VF, not using LiveView, I can't take an image. Last night it locked maybe 10 times in 2hrs.Temp? +10. lct Posted November 10, 2013 Share #170 Posted November 10, 2013 It is not normal at all. Did you try to change your memory card? Or to format it with SD Formatter?
algrove Posted November 10, 2013 Share #171 Posted November 10, 2013 The simple solution would be to have Leica fix it. Let's get real here folks. HAving to turn it continually off and on is not a simple solution when things are happening in front of you and you want to capture an image. I don't believe what I am hearing here. I do not believe lock up issues have anything to do with SD cards IMHO.

You should try my friend. No question of turning the cam on and off continuously of course. Just disable sleep mode, turn the cam on and shoot what you have to shoot. When shooting is over just don't forget to switch the camera off that's all. Now keep in mind that i'm essentially a classic RF shooter so i cannot swear that it will work as well for you but there is no harm to try isn't it. I do not believe lock up issues have anything to do with SD cards IMHO. Once again the onus is on the user to adapt, to accommodate, to modify their shooting behaviour to pamper the poor camera. Just doesn't fit with Leica's mechanical history of excellence, with the bullshit they spout in their marketing, nor with my requirements of a 'pro level' camera. Period. Now keep in mind that i'm essentially a classic RF shooter so i cannot swear that it will work as well for you but there is no harm to try isn't it. I will give it a try, but this is BS that we should have to do this with a Leica. They are supposed to be a high quality product. Agree without EVF and shooting RF, it functions as advertised. Other than with street use, I am mostly using R lenses since the M was advertised as the answer to using R glass in a Leica. Well it does not function well at all. Like I said currently there is NO fix for this lockup problem. From my experience when the camera is new I get less lockups than when it has 3000 actuations and up. I am now on my 4th M and I do see a pattern here. I keep forgetting to mention that with lockups and once back using the EVF soon thereafter, the EVF dims to less than half its full power. After a second off/on it then is dimmed about 60% and only after the third off/on does the EVF return to normal brightness levels. So it is not a "simple solution" to an obvious manufacturing defect when leaving the factory. I certainly hope a simple FW update will solve the problem, but I suspect it has to do with a component or two.

These days I have found that using Tone:Auto produces a hideously (to me eye) overexposed image ...... BUT by then pulling back on overall exposure till it looks 'normal' you get a very pleasing halfway HDR like effect. Try it. Then as you say .... a big clarity boost and you have images from another planet
