What do you want in the next digital M?

I'd hate it, articulated viewing screen is something I wouldn't buy a camera at all

Funny..

The lack of an articulated screen is the 1 reason I would not buy an M...of any type..

Once you have used a fully articulated screen....it opens up so many other possibilities..in both the vid mode as well as camera angle options..

Rather than just eye level stuff..

Which gets old real fast..

Honestly, I've changed my mind as a result of the A7R release.

My perfect Leica body would be.

- 24MP (can take more, not fussed though)

- High ISO ability of M240 but without banding and green cast

- MP sized.

- No LV or EVF

- External ISO where the film rewind is on the MP

- 'Feel' of the MP

- Shutter sound of M240

- One frameline at a time

- No red dot, no top body script.

And I would like one in silver, with a colour sensor, and one in Black paint, with a monochrome sensor.

These two bodies and my 3 lenses and I'm a happy camper.

I would be in a very similar camp:

- MP size and design

- Frameleaver

- M240 rangefinder

- 24MP

- Clean base ISO

- Correct firmware and color profiles

- High ISO ability without banding and green cast

- No Accessory port

- No Video

- LiveView only via Display

- Shutter sound of M240

- The M240 Addon grip

Basically a refined M9P with the M240 mechanical improvements, a state of the Art Sensor(DR, HighISO etc.) that matches/ is close to a CCD at base ISO and LV on the back display.

Digital sensor assembly with associated rear mother board and rear LCD is thicker than film and back pressure plate therefore getting thinner camera than film M is not going to happen unless registry distance is reduced by some margin and this will never happen.

Handling & endurance wise M240 is already improvement over M9, big plus to Leica.

Area for improvement:-

Hardware & Software

  • Neck strap lugs more robust.
  • Fast start.
  • Dust shaking sensor.
  • EVF refresh rate & off-centre focusing.
  • Optional battery grip with alternative trigger for shooting in portrait orientation - SLR style.

Process

  • Firmware development, validation and testing management.
  • Manufacturing quality control - no more dropping strap lugs etc.
  • Supply chain, bringing accessories to market in time & quantity.

My list:

(1) A solution, finally, to the always dirty - and difficult to clean - sensor (makes me crazy, again!). Why have I never had this problem with the OMD, for instance? Why must I have it with every digital Leica?

(2) Faster start-up and wake-up time - camera must take a picture every time I press the shutter button when the camera is on, no f*** excuses (to stay with the spirit of this thread). Must take images even if I take a fast sequence in the single photo mode. This issue makes me really angry, loses good images.

(3) Better implementation of focus peaking - ideally to see it better without the need to magnify the image, to save one process step that takes my eye off the whole image.

............. Faster start-up and wake-up time - camera must take a picture every time I press the shutter button when the camera is on,.........

This, instantaneous shutter response regardless of sleep-time, is about the only thing I can think of that would significantly improve the M, if I'm being realistic. And I don't how how realistic this is either!

Many of the other things mentioned might be nice, but wouldn't seriously change anything for me, and some would actually make it a less appealing camera.

I can sure tell you what I do not want in a leica m

Drop the movie button

No articulating screen

No add on Evf

What would love to see

Hybrid finder with dual magnified OVF

A larger speed dial with locking A button

A programable set of buttons for Iso. Uncoated lens selection so on

Dual sd slots for back up in camera

+1

Give me a camera that is capable as the M9 and M and make it 40MP (a real 40MP), let it also shoot 24MP (for those that don't want 40), make the EVF a hybrid design similar to Fuji's, or at least make the current design upgradable (I'm not so fussed about this one), and you may never hear another peep out of me again. Promise.

Higher pixel density on a small sensor is vastly overrated. I own a P25 back for my Contax - 48x36mm with 22mp 16bit CCD sensor. It is stunning. Tonality, bite, etc. So no Leica, keep the 40mp on the back burner and fix all the other stuff.

smaller body

every generation of digital leica is becoming bigger, M240 is bigger and heavier then M8 M9

it must be for my taste not bigger then a M6

Yes. If there's one thing the A7 has already taught me it's that there is no earthly reason why the M240 shouldn't be the same size as an M6/P. There is such a thing as too small, for sure. But the M240 is too big. .m6 for me would be the perfect size.

On the whole I am very happy and impressed with my M so have only a few things that I really need

1. Black out time lag after taking a shot using the EVF (top of the list)

2. positionable focal point in LV

3. Auto iso as in the M9 (should be fixed in future firmware update)

I want to second your dedicated ISO button. I really can't see why they couldn't put a dial on the top for this with A, and then all of the supported ISO speeds. This could be placed for example where the film rewind crank is on the film Leica's... If they did that, there would be no reason at all for me to access anything on the back of the camera during normal shooting...

1. Dedicated ISO button

2. Dedicated A-compensation button

3. ISO settings showing (even when camera is off)

4. A-compensation showing (even when camera is off)

5. Programmable quick format button

6. To create user defined lens profiles

7. Bulb exposure

8. Faster start-up time

9. Auto sensor cleaning

10. To disable everything that has to do with movie. Button, menus, etc

11. External EVF

Aside from this I find it hard to believe that Leica will not be forced to create a M-mount with electronic contacts, and a corresponding new M-E lens series.

Digital MP (identical dimensions and controls) with image display and relevant additional buttons for play, scroll and info on the back (and iso somewhere). Decent sensor and manual shutter re-cocking. That's it.

Designgoals would be

1. As small as possible (with ultimate goal being M6 size)

2. As simple as possible. (Simplicity is so simple to mess up by adding all these new possibilities of digital cameras. So less buttons and certainly no extra dials unless you lose the backscreen and put a iso dial there.)

Both these things I feel they messed up in the M240. So please dont continue down that path.

The M-E fitted with a sensor and parts that will be available for ten years as promised, with the new M240 viewfinder and costing £1000 less.

Oh and pigs that can fly!

Just about every previously wished-for addition here, with the inclusion of dual card slots for 64gb or larger cards, clean files at 12800 iso, base 25 iso and long exposure ability (important for me), 11 fps,. Square crop (nice with a tilting screen) and sweep panorama, wifi and a powerful cls equivalent option, 36mgp , side slots for battery and cards and a fixed base instead of that stupid detachable thing for the tripod connection.

Oh, and some faith in a QC department that might replace their coffee mugs and newspapers with some occasional batch testing.

... very easy - back to the roots for an M24x - real P or say MP

1. Shutter sound from the mechanical M6

2. No motor-winding

3. Easier ISO-control (something like the M6) - the monitor is not so important for me and could be smaller

4. video not important - also the electronic viewfinder

5. The frame lines from the M240 are good especially in the dark (for me the most important improvement since the M9)

6. With the codes lenses it should be possible to place only one frame line

I know many don't want this puristic M and think more electronic is a great improvement. I don't think so since I had many trouble with my N,,, - too much set-up possibilities

Digital sensor assembly with associated rear mother board and rear LCD is thicker than film and back pressure plate therefore getting thinner camera than film M is not going to happen unless registry distance is reduced by some margin and this will never happen.

The removal of the LCD will reduce the thickness by a few millimetres, though I agree there is nothing much that can be done to make the sensor and associated board thinner. The answer may be to increase the distance that the mount protrudes from the body though I suspect it is already at the limit that enables the traditional RF and roller cam geometry to work with current M mount lenses. Of course, if the RF itself is ditched in favour of some kind of EVF (something I'm not keen on), the camera body could easily go back to MP proportions (albeit possibly with a more protruding mount).

An interesting compromise for me would be a body that is thinner than M(240) and with as few buttons as it's possible to have on a digital stills camera (I like the earlier suggestion for the introduction of an ISO dial on top).
