ryee3 Posted October 20, 2013 Share #24  Posted October 20, 2013 I carry mine either by the shoulder stock attached to the tripod collar or by a monopod attached to the tripod collar or by a tripod attached to the tripod collar. Never by the camera. It's a 'til death do us part' lens for me. It's so important for my work that I bought a backup copy.  Dear Doug: What tripod collar are you using on this lens? Does Leica make one for this lens?  Thanks ryee3
farnz Posted October 20, 2013 Share #25 Â Posted October 20, 2013 Ryee3, Â I'll answer on behalf of Doug in the interim: the 280/4 APO-Telyt-R has it's own built-in tripod collar. Picture here. Â Pete.
dennersten Posted October 20, 2013 Author Share #26 Â Posted October 20, 2013 I keep my right hand on the camera. Â Focus with the right hand also?
topoxforddoc Posted October 20, 2013 Share #27 Â Posted October 20, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) If you cradle the body (DMR in my case) and the 280/4 (or indeed any R long lens), you can focus using your LEFT thumb, whilst cradling the lens/body. The focus ring is so smooth, that it is a doddle. That way, you can have your right hand on the shutter button/body so that you don't miss the shot. farnz Posted October 20, 2013 Share #28 Â Posted October 20, 2013 Completely agree with Charlie, focussing on the 280/4 can easily be done with one finger because the focussing action is so light and smooth. Â Pete.
dennersten Posted October 20, 2013 Author Share #29 Â Posted October 20, 2013 Great thanks! I am dry swimming right now. Novoflex adapter should be here on Monday and shoulderstock later in the week, monopod and tripod are here. I am extremly eager to try out what you taught me, thanks! Picture here.  Pete.  Wrong picture. The 280mm f/4 APO's tripod collar is nearly identical in function to the tripod collar on ryee3's 105-280 Vario. BTW the zoom on the 105-280 Vario is similarly light and smooth and the zoom ring is positioned so that the users' left thumb can switch between zoom and focus without skipping a beat. After a few seconds' acclimatization (no exaggeration) it's instinctive.

algrove Posted October 21, 2013 Share #33  Posted October 21, 2013 Al, Look at the drawing on the Wiki. What is missing?  Guy  Guy  Thanks for getting me to look at the Wiki drawings again. It seems I have the 14188 V2 except mine has the electronic cable release built in. The original box it came in seemed so empty that I thought I got taken. Not so, as all parts are included. Thanks. Now the question begs-will I ever use it?
wildlightphoto Posted October 21, 2013 Share #34  Posted October 21, 2013 Guy Thanks for getting me to look at the Wiki drawings again. Now the question begs-will I ever use it?  The Wiki page for the 14188 isn't quite correct. The shoulder stock labeled version 2 is actually version 3. The cable release can be removed by loosening the set screw above it and sliding the release out toward the front. The Wiki page also does not mention the 14239 shoulder stock which replaced the 14188 some time before 2009. Also the 14188 isn't just the grip; the shoulder stock and grip together is the 14188. Torquinian Posted November 15, 2013 Share #35 Â Posted November 15, 2013 Although I don't have an APO-280, I also use the Leitz gunstock with my Telyt 350. I have the electrical cable release for my DMR or Motor Drive-R on the R9 and it really works very well. My left hand focuses while my right index finger is on the electric cable release. You should try it, Doug. Here is an example of the result:Â That is an odd looking bird;- what is it?

algrove Posted November 16, 2013 Share #37 Â Posted November 16, 2013 Every time I look at and handle the 280/4 I marvel at how small it is for what it does. And then when I hall out my 280/2.8 I marvel at how big it is for what it does.
gvaliquette Posted November 16, 2013 Share #38  Posted November 16, 2013  It's a Shoebill. Previously thought to be related to storks but recent research suggests that its taxonomy is unclear.  Right. It's now thought to be more closely related to pelicans, and its closest relative might be the hammerkopt. I was very lucky to see this bird, on lake Albert, in Uganda. Its total population is estimated to be about 5,000 to 8,000 worldwide, in the african rift valley. I was luckier yet to "catch it with a catch", a catfish.  Guy Welcome, dear visitor! albireo_double Posted November 19, 2013 Share #40  Posted November 19, 2013 Fantastic images and a great catch. Lake Albert is a beautiful place, I was there last year and saw a grey crowned crane, the fish eagles, hornbills…etc. but no shoebill.
