My M8 and I will be coming from London to Washington DC for work and I'll have one free day on the trip - this coming Monday.

Any recommendations from people in the area on places to visit - either photo galleries, suppliers or photogenic places to visit?

Chris - Washington is a very photogenic city with great galleries. For street photography: Georgetown on a busy day, or the Mall, which is where you get those long vistas of the monuments. Obviously tourist Washington has lots of good opportunies. Don't miss the FDR memorial on the Mall, as it is an exquisitly landscaped and constructed park, no matter what your politics are! There are good photo galleries, such as Govinda in Georgetown, which has lots of classic rock'n'roll photographers. There is a Harry Benson retrospective coming up at... the Corcoran? Some museum. Go to the Smithsonian Institution's website and see what will be at all of their museums when you are here -- the best and biggest DC museums are under their umbrella. Good luck. JB

You might try Rock Creek, which runs underneath Connecticut Avenue, about a 1 mile north of the White House. If you get lucky with the weather, there are great shots of the Taft bridge (which supports Connecticut Avenue), a beautiful architectural structure. Plenty of spring flowers and the flowing stream. There is a paved path that runs next to it, and it makes a pleasant walk as well. If you are staying at the Wardman Park Hotel, it is just a short walk from there, or its a short cab ride from downtown DC.

You can also wander down toward Washington National Airport and stop at one of several parks on the way from Downtown DC to the airport. Here you can find some excellent vistas of the city and the Potomac. Geese and ducks are also quite plentiful right now, along with bike riders and joggers.

Post a few of your images when you get back.

Also, the Capitol building is a beauty, especially at sunrise or sunset. You will be amazed at the detail an M8 will capture of her dome. A great shot can be had west of the building looking across the large reflecting pool

Dear all - thanks again. Raining proverbial cats and dogs at the moment so it's a choice of testing the water resistance of the M or preparing for meetings. Doing this at the moment and hoping for an improvement in the weather. Forecast for the real free day (Monday) looks better. As I'm staying pretty central (in the embassy district) I should be able to get out. I'll also check the forum and will post... Last night I jet lagged and confused I at least got some shots of the room with a coded 21 pre-asph and IR cut filter at ISO 640 - Lens selection ON+IR. The good news is faithful colour, NO vignetting, NO cyan drift and very low noise levels. that I could see + one of the things Iike with this lens is that there's very little distortion compared with my 16-35 Canon lens at the same focal length...

For scenics and postcards, the Tidal Basin is a good place for shooting at dawn and dusk (the attached photo was taken at dawn with an M8 at the Tidal Basin two weeks ago; the blossoms are gone now, but there are views through the trees of the Jefferson and Washington Momuments). Or, walk across the Memorial Bridge and down to the Potomac River on the northen side of the bridge (crossing the busy roads carefully) and continue walking north for good views of the city monuments across the Potomac (a good jogging/biking path runs along the river).

Chris,

If you are ever in the city again, don't miss the elaborately decorated lobby of the Library of Congress. It is located only a block from the Capital building and is a real treat for the eyes.

I know very well Washington DC, I have been there several times. Here is a list of places that i my opinion are a MUST see, and I am sure that I will tell you something maybe different from other people:

1. Arligton cemetery, Kennedys grave and Iwo Jima memorial: this will make you dream if you saw movies like "Hair" for example.

2. Georgetown University.

3. National Gallery of Art: here the difference with Eurpo is tha you can use the camera freely, there are many incredible paintings and people looking at them, not very crowded. Same for the Modern Art part.

4. Air and Space Museum: if you like planes and rockets... there is also a new section of it next to Dulles Airport.

5. Dumbarton Oaks Gardens: and old villa with a beautiful deisgned garden to visit.

6. Other monuments and memorials like Vietnam war (see photo on BEAR sas)

Bill - love the red cardinal (?) in the rain ... It begins to be an interesting thread. Couldn't agree more about the weather Sunday. Took the Metro to see friends in Arlington...

The good news is that the rain seems to be easing off. Tomorrow I'll walk from where I'm staying (the Westin near Dupont Circle) down towards some of the more historic part so of town ...

Here are some I took yesterday in DC on or near Pennsylvania Ave. I had just loaded the new firmware version into the M8 a few minutes before.

The cherry blossoms are mostly gone. I found some apple blossoms (crabapple). Another couple snaps:
