Is there anything I need to know regarding storage and non-use for long periods of time? Thanks. Presumably remove the battery and keep it in a dry dust free place... I haven't used mine for a year. Thinking of selling it. I use an Olympus OMD EM5 for colour work now anyway.
earleygallery Posted October 11, 2013 Share #3 Posted October 11, 2013 Complex electrical items left unused for long periods of time have a habit of failing. Some things to consider here How do I preserve an unused computer? I think the M9 has an internal battery?
alun Posted October 11, 2013 Share #4 Posted October 11, 2013 It seems a shame for a $6k camera (or whatever it costs) to sit on its own in a desk drawer....
tobey bilek Posted October 11, 2013 Share #5 Posted October 11, 2013 Charge the battery monthly and run a few pics. I would not let it sit totally unused. Wrap it up in an old towel or original packaging if you have it.
sblutter Posted October 13, 2013 Share #6 Posted October 13, 2013 With film bodies I always ran through all the shutter speeds every few months to keep the oils from separating Reminders on the computer helps
doolittle Posted October 14, 2013 Share #7 Posted October 14, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) If you aren't using it at all, definitely consider selling it. If you regret your decision in the future you should be able to purchase a similar one for the same or less. I would exercise the camera once or month or so, and make sure to keep the battery at least partially charged. Store it in a well aired cupboard. Watch the humidity depending on your local climate. david strachan Posted October 15, 2013 Share #8 Posted October 15, 2013 Hi Just post it to me here in Australia. I'll keep it exercised until you need it again. cheers Dave S
Peter H Posted October 16, 2013 Share #9 Posted October 16, 2013 It seems such a shame to me that so many accomplished and serious photographers are ignoring the wonderful world of colour that is calling out for skilful interpretation. But if you really have no desire to use your beautiful M9, please consider selling it to someone who will enjoy it.
sm23221 Posted October 17, 2013 Author Share #10 Posted October 17, 2013 I wouldn't say I'm ignoring the world of color. I find B&W more challenging but still find occasional use for the M9 when color is the focus of the photograph. The time interval in between using the M9 could be months at a time. Shade Posted October 18, 2013 Share #11 Posted October 18, 2013 Since I purchased my MM I haven't used my M9 and it found a new home in my desk drawer. Is there anything I need to know regarding storage and non-use for long periods of time? Thanks. If I were you I'd put it in a dry cabinet with everything removed. Even the base plate. If you don't have a dry cabinet, buy one of those sealable plastic bag that is air tight, and put a small pocket of silica gel inside it, and seal it. And store it. You wouldn't want anything to get inside your camera, especially fungus if you live in a humid area.
sm23221 Posted October 18, 2013 Author Share #12 Posted October 18, 2013 Living in So. California our climate is very dry. We hardly get any rain so humidity is never a problem.
Shade Posted October 18, 2013 Share #13 Posted October 18, 2013 Well I guess if humidity is never a problem you can just put it in a seal tight bag and leave it in your drawer.
LeicaMSeattle Posted December 3, 2013 Share #14 Posted December 3, 2013 Put the M9 in B&W mode and shoot with it as well since you own it, either that or sell it while you can get some current value for it. The Fuji X1 Pro might be something to invest in.
Guido Posted December 3, 2013 Share #15 Posted December 3, 2013 Drawer storage = bad idea IMO... out of sight, out of mind! Rather, I'd suggest to keep all unused cameras on a shelf or in a cupboard within eyesight. You'll be constantly reminded that they're still around, and waiting for photo opportunities. The chance that you'll grab one of them on a whim on your way out will be much higher if they're visible instead of hiding in the dark.
