There is no absolute Red/Green buy light for the A7®.

- I am keeping the M for now, and see if I can live with the A7r only.

P.S. Thanks everyone for samples and reviews.

Are you aware of the shutter noise? The A7r is really loud.

Thanks for posting these comparison images.

In comparing the WATE images between the A7R (resized to 24mp) with the M240, I noticed that the left side of the image is sharp with the A7R but blurred with the M240. Yet on the right hand side, this behaviour is reversed.

Rather odd

Maybe caused by the loss of concentricity between adapter's bayonet mount opening and lens mount opening?

Paul asked above about A7r v M9.

I've been playing with the A7r for the last few weeks, and it's a keeper for me, but it's not a replacement for the M9 at all. Sure, it has more MP, and probably out-resolves the M9, but as a package, it doesn't quite do it.

My equipment is much like Karl-Heinz's:

  • M9 & Monochrom (& M3), with half dozen or so lenses (okay, maybe 9 or 10)

  • D800E, but with only two Nikkor AF-S lenses - an 85 Micro and an 80-400mm zoom

  • A7R with Novoflex NEX/LEM and NEX/NIK adaptors, and a Hawk M adapter. I may buy a Zeiss E mount lens for the Sony, depending on what becomes available.

The A7R works perfectly with the Nikkor lenses (really, really well), which is no surprise. It's more hit and miss with the Leica glass, but fun to experiment. A tripod is worth the effort.

Here are a couple of snaps I took (first with the 75 Summilux, and the second with the 35 Summilux FLE), and as they were handheld, not really sharp enough, but worth taking.

Cheers

John

Thanks John. Really great shots. I am keeping my M9 as well, but for good.

So, I thought it may be interesting to compare a really long lens on both D800E and A7R.

Why not the Leitz 560/6.8 (it's wrongly labeled 560/5.6) with Novoflex Slow Focusing Tube.

Here is one with Olympus OM-D E-M5.

Now with my additions to avoid oscillations and vibrations to make it useable and with Sony NEX-7.

In each case there are three adapters between lens and camera.

First an adapter that converts from Novoflex Bellows to Nikon F.

Second a Novoflex adapter that converts from Nikon F to Leica M.

Third an adapter that converts from Leica M to either MFT or Sony E.

The Nikon D800E attaches directly to the Novoflex Bellows to Nikon F adapter. This is the image I get when stopping down 2 f-stops.

In order to attach the Sony A7R one needs the Novoflex Bellows to Nikon F adapter as well.

I also used an Nikon F to Sony E adapter, without going through the M mount first.

As one can see this results in additional vignetting on the A7R.

Yes, that may explain that issue with the A7R image. But what about the issue with the M240 image. Is it possible the same applies with regard to the body/lens mount on the M240?

Mine's noisier than my M9p, the M240 shutter is lovely though. The A7r seems to change depending on the lens fitted.

I would put that down to sample variation with Leica bodies. I have owned two M9's and one M9P and they were all different. I have seen many comments from others noting differences between their various MM, M9, M9P bodies. Eg. here's a thread on GETDPI:

Nice snaps of my home city by a foreigner ;)

PM me if you want to catch up if we can arrange it.

A plea for moderation, let's try keep this discussion semi-Leica oriented.

In here, I don't want to read about how good Sony files are with ANY other lens than a Leica lens.

As a long time adapted Sony user, I don't even talk about, let alone post photos I took with my much closer to Leica Rokkor-M 28 on this forum.

JayBob, my impression is that already many users here consider an A7 / A7R at least alongside their Leica M/MM/M9 and they may be interested in a wider view not only restricted on M-mount lenses. There is always an option to skip it instead sending the others away to different forums.

Thanks. I agree with you.

On other websites, notably getdpi and fredmiranda, I notice quite a few names that are familiar to me, whom I respect and first noticed on this forum.

It appears some of the more interesting discussion, even of Leica related subjects, seems to have migrated to other websites.

I wonder whether such a development is in the interest of this community?

Sticking ones head in the sand doesn't seem to be a good policy IMHO.

But maybe that's what the owner of this website prefers?

I simply don't know.

You might say that is very "Leica".

Leica User Forum > International User Forum > Leica Products > Digital Forum > The Sony A7 thread [Merged]

"Digital Forum The Leica Digital Forum is for discussions about Leica's Digital cameras."

My understanding is that this Forum is for discussing Leica Products. Just my opinion, but this thread should be a place to how this new Sony camera relates to an adapted Leica M or R (or Viso) lens experience.

I'm a Sony/Leica shooter, one who considers the NEX6 to be a better overall camera than certainly the M8, possibly the M9. I also know how well a Nikkor 85 1.4 is capable of performing. Posting A7/Canikon images tells us nothing except you've mounted a really oversized lens onto a small body. It's just not relevant. It's only a matter of time before this already bloated thread gets a "here are some examples of video from my 70-200 Canon lens on a Sony...it just looks OK..."entry. Those are topics for a Nikon site, a Canon site, or a Sony site.

Again, just my opinion, and a call to stay on topic.
