The Sony A7 thread [Merged]

Possibly dumb question - but since when has that stopped me!

There's no route, via Sony adapters, to get PDAF on the A7R with the new FE lenses. Is there? And if not - are the lenses that you can achieve PDAF via the adapter full frame but with a longer registration distance and therefore in crop mode, or are they full frame?

Apologies, I still don't speak Sony, but learning every day.

It maybe that the Sony cameras switch to PDAF in low light situations similar to how Olympus has implemented this in the OMD-1.

I have no knowledge on this but some have said that an AA filter is required for on sensor PDAF. So it may have nothing to do with the mega pixel count. .

Thanks, Allan.

I've a Pentax K5-IIs which is of without an AA filter, however, featuring PDAF or PD focus confirmation for manual focus. I did test it.

The sensor is also made by SONY, although a 16MP APS-C one. That's the ground for suspicion.

Anyway, every company has its own unique marketing strategy that quides the way how product should be developed.

Don`t give up on your trusty digital Leica M. The A7® don`t look too promising with M lenses.

Finally! A set of photographs that make sense and answer the questions! No showboating, the common lenses we all use, and a scene with no questions remaining about colour balance etc.

Looks like it will be the A7 then, not the A7R for Leica/rangefinder lenses.

Steve

Yes, thanks for the info. Besides, Sony's always was the one with a new model every couple of months and consecutive price drops. Having a M9 / M240 one might as well wait to see things develop.

Regarding predicted price hikes of the Noctilux and 75mm lenses: who could stop Leica from restarting all versions if there will be real demand?

I've received word from Sony that my A7r will arrive on Monday

I would be more excited but the latest set of flikr lens tests has worried me. Although I shoot 50mm a lot the vignetting and colour shift on the 35/2 is a worry. Downloaded the raw files from the french site as well (50 1.4 at high ISO) and they are not impressing me much.

Still I should find out next week whether it will work for me.

I'm equally as unwilling to rush to judgement as I was before the flickr set. I still need to test the camera for myself, with the lenses I own and make my own judgement call after appropriate profiling and post processing.

The M240 adjust the lens errors in camera. The Sony can, and very user customiseably so, but is not on these shots. So already it's not apples to apples.

I read an interesting post (sorry no link) about people complaining that the 28mm M was odd in the corners on the A7R, the poster then linked to the Leica literature on that lens which said that at wider apertures you loose detail in the corners!

My point being, nothing so far, pro or con either Leica or Sony can convince me either way.

Also, I'm unlike a lot of you. I'm not wed to my Leica system at all. I've already replaced the M9+35 Cron with the X100s. If the 35 FE and the 55 FE are close enough to the 35Cron and 50 Lux I own, I'll drop them both and go full Sony - gain AF and loose weight in the process.

It could also be that 'something' in the handling or images from the Sony turns me off completely and I send it back after 2 weeks, sticking with the M. But I certainly can't tell anything from peoples images on the web. (Besides, the 35 f/2 and 50 Lux shots look perfectly ok to me. Edit - actually the 35 looks like the adapter is no straight, or cheap, LH side compared to RH side is way different. Another reason to test myself!)

I hit submit, the doorbell rings and my A7r arrived. It's charging at the moment but I've fired off a few shots. It's certainly a tier down from Leica in fit and finish and it makes any of my lenses (Zeiss/Voit or Leica) look very well made. The painting is quite poor in comparison and the lettering is also weak. The on off switch wobbles a bit too. Still this is a fraction of the cost so savings are being made somewhere!

Initially it seems that the speed of processing will not get in the way which is a big plus when comparing to the M9 where the analog viewfinder is very responsive! I like the difference in weight and size, a little too small for my hand but great for a large coat pocket.

The lenses also look big on this size of body, especially coupled with the adaptor. I had never noticed how the proportion of the lens and body in the M system is so good.

Did you expect any surprises from further tests that again focus only on vintage glas for analog film and do not include those RF WA lenses that are expected to work on the A7/A7R? Time to stop extrapolating on all other RF WA lenses and concentrate on these...

If I can't use my existing Leica WA lenses to get the best from the camera, and have to get a £4,000 lens to do so, you can probably understand why it's appeal is rapidly diminishing for me.

I left the frustrating and expensive trial and error phase behind me which included early mft, NEX, Fuji. It`s 2013 and I want cameras which simply work with my favorite glass, which is mostly m-mount. Other than Leica M, the only camera which fit the bill so far, was the GXR - M, albeit with an aps-c size sensor. The lenses Sony launched with the A7 are not of interest to me.

Yes, and thats only for 16 to 21, then you're stuffed until you get to 50mm.

So you might as well forget the Sony and just go ahead and buy the WATE for your M-mount camera ;)

So we've come the full circle for Leica WA lenses with the A7R ?

This thread reminds me a bit of an old saying in medicine - that you have to rush out and use the new drug before it doesn't work anymore....

I'm not being argumentative, but "we" here is a small niche of people, within a small niche group. Sony may care about providing a solution for some other brands, but I'd be very surprised if they care about certain legacy lenses of a very small brand. So it never really was going to be the solution, was it? You're stuck with Leica because, well, because you've stuck with Leica. Not a criticism, each artist has their own vision and needs to choose the tools to acheive it.

I've been briefly trying the M28 Elmarit ASPH and the edges are looking quite good. I'm probably just easily pleased and it will take me a while to try all the lenses I have here and find out what works.

The 75 Summarit looks good and is easy to focus. Still not what I would call the Leica look, plenty of menu options to fiddle with though!
