I think that you will find that they are NEX batteries - so no shortage and pretty cheap

Yes, NPW50(?) on the one that it comes with, "W Series" - searched amazon same day angle got charger and two spares for peanuts. Made a refreshing change.

I wonder why nobody is taping up that rather prominent Sony badge for “stealth”.

I know, right?

The only way it could get worse would be if it was, I dunno, Red and maybe get larger with each model release? Round perhaps, like a big fire alarm button.

Given the opposing purple AND green lines in the samples it makes it lateral. I've never found a RAW converter that deals with it in a way that works or is is acceptable. You need to get it into Photoshop and I would say it is reasonably trivial.

No, it is longitudinal CA. Quite normal for a Noctilux wide open.

SLR Magic HyperPrime CINE 50mm T0.95 on A7R:

[...]

Thanks, seems a great combo.

I love this lens, but using it on the M is a pita because of the medieval EVF and firmware (no RF coupling on mine). Hope it is much easier to shoot on the Sony.

Besides, seems there are concerns about using this lens with an M camera (check warning in red at the bottom of this page):

LensRentals.com - Rent a SLR Magic CINE 50mm T0.95

Wonder if that is just because of the heavy weight, or there's more...

Yes, using it on the M 240 was no fun because you can not move the magnification area out of the center and center focusing + recomposing will put you out of focus most of the time when shooting with such a shallow DOF.

I think they mixed something up there. When they say, "In order to use this lens, you will need an adapter" they mean using it on APS-C and mFT mirrorless cams. Also when they say "this version is not designed to be used with M-mount cameras. Not only is it not rangefinder-coupled, but it will also damage your M-mount camera if mounted" it indicates that they talk about the HyperPrime CINE 35mm T0.95 and not the 50mm T0.95. In fact the CINE 35/T0.95 has an M-mount and covers about APS-H image circle, but it's rear lens element is too large to fit into the throat of a Leica M or a Ricoh GXR M-mount module (but it fits into most M-to-E-/M-to-X-/M-to-mFT-mount adapters). The CINE 50mm T0.95 fits perfectly well on an A7R with the M-to-E-mount adapter from SLR Magic or e.g. the adapter from Novoflex. As the lens is quite heavy (approx. 1kg), it may be better to use it on the A7R than on the A7 as the A7R has a magnesium alloy strengthening for the mount inside the body. But this may also apply to other large and heavy lenses like f/2.8 zooms.

Yes I did.

I also taped the LEICA logo and Red Dot on my M6TTL too and there is no Leica logo or Red Dot on my a la carte M7.

I have my A7 for a week and I like it very much. For me the A7 has a 'Leica' feel.

Two lenses I hardly used on my analog M's were the 90 Elmarit and 28-35-50 MATE, I use them now on the A7.

I found out that when I put the MATE between 28 and 50mm I can focus much closer.

The picture I show is from a press-conference 90 Elmarit F:2.8 ISO 400 1/125

As soon as the strong vignette showed up in the image by the Leica M21/2.8 ASPH on SONY A7R I found the inner opening of Hawk’s Factory adapter seems smaller than other fixed-type adapter like Novoflex and Metalbones, a concern for more impeded light before hitting the sensor.

Then I called up Mr. Peng, the owner of Hawk’s Factory and also a Leica user. He told me that what I’m using is the version 2.5 with the inner opening diameter of 36mm while the newly improved version 3.0 is of diameter 40mm. I received a ver. 3 one this morning for testing M21/2.8 ASPH at f2.8 which brings out a strong vignette and color shift, discovering that images created by the version 3 are a little bit of brighter whatever at f2.8, f8, and f16. The images are in the Dropbox link as follows, the left hand one is by ver.2.5 and the right is the ver. 3 sold at eBay by US$ 189.

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/6mseiqi6vyq9e0g/M8dH35UVlZ

He told me the ver. 3 features two kinds of improvement beyond the close distance focusing capability in the old version.

1. It can carry the load of 5kg taking lens as a cantilever beam.

2. I allows adjustment to focus to the infinity for some particular Leica and Voitlander lenses

It is done by a spring supported lever located at the front element to lock into a groove on a tab screwed at the rear element, preventing the moving parts in the adapter from potential slipping due to heavy load. This makes the adapter act as if it were a fixed one.

Push the cocking end of the lever to disengage itself out of the groove and rotate to the dead end, enables the close distance focusing functionality.

Loosen and then tighter the two black screws in the tab on the grooved rear tab to move the tab shift to a position that allows focusing at the infinity for particular lenses. The attached images demonstrate how it works.

I will take opportunity to test the Hawk ver. 3 adapter to justify its value.

Thomas,

Thank you. It is disappointing that I purchased my version 2.5 near the end of September and it has now been replaced with a new version 3.0 just a short time ago. At this point, I only have the Minolta CLE MC 40mm f2 M-Rokkor lens. I may purchase a CV 21mm f1.8 Ultron toward mid to late January.

I look forward to your findings with the new adapter to help me decide if I want to now spend even more money on the version 3. :(

Just found V3 on ebay.

With this tiny Perar 3.5/35 it fits in my pocket. Ok, depends on the pocket size...

Had no opportunity for a decent shot, only some reference shots with 15, 21, 28, 35, 50 through my white disk.

Lens color cast (and vignettte, as necessary) can be fixed, but edge softness below 50 could be a weak point. Until Capture One supports the A7r, I will wait with extensive wide angle shooting since Adobes Flat Field Plugin and Cornerfix cost me too much time, IMO.

First shots with the Apo50, 90AA, and the Elmar 135 are more than satisfying. Reason enough to keep the Sony.

I know this has been over talked about...but can someone tell me what the shutter sound of the a7 (not the a7r -not interested) is compared to an M240 if anyone has both? I have an M240 and have also ordered the a7 but I'm seriously considering switching to the Rx1 before it arrives just for the shutter sound...Thx

Huff had a post in his blog regarding the shutter sounds of the A7, A7r and M. I think he mentioned that both A7s are louder. If quiet shutter is important and you can live with a 35mm lens only, the RX1 and the Fuji X100s are better options.

You got me there, I've been thinking about it or picking out the white paint!

After a few days with the A7 I can say that technically it is very good camera though I feel no bond with it as I do with the Leica M or even the fuji X-Pro1. It makes me really appreciate the fact that an OVF gives me a real connection with the subject that I am photographing (human that is) that is just not possible with and EVF.

No, no, no. You are supposed to be connecting with 36 million little pixels. I believe that is the point of the exercise with the A7R. Try a little more zooming in when you are in LR and see if that makes you feel better. It is more about that than anything else.

Just pulled my new A7R off the charger (why don't they supply a separate charger??) and shot a couple of comparison pix with my M. Although I have Camera Raw 8.3, it seems I have to download Lightroom RC 5.3 to get Lightroom to preview the Sony's .ARW files.

So while I'm waiting for the download to finish, I thought I'd ask someone with more time using this camera with Leica M lenses -- am I correct that in manual focus mode (as with an M-mount lens), "Focus Magnification" can only be used when manually enabled through the "Menu" settings? That is, do you have to go into "Menu" each and every time you want to see your image magnified when focusing carefully?
