CaptZoom Posted November 21, 2013 Share #2521 Posted November 21, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Aren't Sony and Olympus partners or something? Oly has good lens tech and gets camera interface design not to mention they're leading the way in stabilization. I wonder how this will play out for fixture product development for both companies? And what, if any thing, this means for Leica?

Rick Posted November 21, 2013 Share #2522 Posted November 21, 2013 John, I like the irony and dry humor. IQ-horsepower + smart ass is a wicked combination. Your explanation is pretty much where a lot of us are at. My RX1 is the walk around PAS. The M is the travel and fondle camera. I had a 5DII and 24-75/2.8. Sold it 3 years ago, but loved it. If, I had spare time I'd love to own the 5DIII and the 24-70/2.8 ver.2. I was hoping that the A7R might replace my M and as dwbell knows, I'm not that much a RF guy. I'd take a technology that focused M lenses better and if that is a really good EVF I wanted to find out with the A7R. I'll still get the A7R, but if it doesn't play well with my Leica M lenses, I probably won't keep it for just my long tele R lenses... just not enough time to use it... I know it would just sit most of the time. The A7R is going to be a nice camera for a lot of people, I'm sure. I'll give it a chance. Oh, I'd like to have an AF lens again someday. Maybe, the A7R will do that for me. But, AF is sounding only so-so on the A7R and what lens to get. How do you beat the Canon 24-70/2.8? I'm off to look at the trolls A7R pics posted on drop box now, Rick
MarkP Posted November 21, 2013 Share #2523 Posted November 21, 2013 These are exactly the reasons that I'm sitting back for a while and let the dust settle. Furthermore, things are now moving so quickly in this market who knows what will be available in six to 12 months. When I cancelled the A7R order my dealer sent me some photos he'd taken with the 3.4/21 SEM (one of my three most used lenses) on the A7R with awful red-edgeing (and some corner smearing) which further reinforced my decision. I want a camera with which I can use all, not some of my M lenses on. I don't want to have to pick and choose before I go out. As I said before, it may be fantastic for my Leica 28-90 and 28-PC but at this stage I don't want to buy a new camera system just for two less-used lenses. That M7 is more and more tempting - no technological clutter. (ps John, thanks for the suggestion of the MP but I don't use film enough to justify the cost, and I want an aperture-priority Auto camera for consistency with my other M cameras. Not for 'non-thinking-auto-exposure' but because I can direct the camera to a place in the scene that gives me the shutter speed I want, lock it with a half-depressed shutter release, recompose and shoot - very fast compared with having to twiddle the shutterspeed dial in situations where time is of the essence or I'm just being lazy. I could be wrong, but at this point I do not think that we will ever see a camera other than a Leica M that will work with all Leica M mount lenses. woorob Posted November 21, 2013 Share #2525 Posted November 21, 2013 dwbell, Thanks for taking the time and effort to provide a Dropbox link to your RAW/DNG test images. I have to say that the A7R with 35FE is pretty damn impressive!

For those of us that already have a bunch of nice M optics, we will end up forever shooting the M cameras and getting great image quality, but always looking over the fence at what cool stuff the the other manufacturers have come up with. woorob Posted November 21, 2013 Share #2528 Posted November 21, 2013 Looking at dwbell's images in PS, is it just me or is there a slight difference in the point of focus? The Sony seems focused on the shutter dial of the M9-P, and the Leica seems focused on the leaves towards the bottom of the pot. (Not that it makes much difference.) dwbell Posted November 21, 2013 Share #2529 Posted November 21, 2013 Looking at dwbell's images in PS, is it just me or is there a slight difference in the point of focus? The Sony seems focused on the shutter dial of the M9-P, and the Leica seems focused on the leaves towards the bottom of the pot. (Not that it makes much difference.) From an earlier post see below. I was trying to focus on the writing on the centre box. ----------- Caveats. I don't know how to manually focus the A7R in zoomed mode yet, so the focus is 'different' in it's placement in all shot groups. I didn't shoot above f/8 because I couldn't be bothered to change the output on my Elinchrom pack from B to A. I didn't shoot below f/2.8 to keep it 'fair' I shot both at their base native ISO. This is lit with a quadra through a 2X1m 1 stop silk (scrim) only. So very constant source in my experience. There's a McBeth chart there for colour folks. I have a stinking head cold and had a hell of a day - I may have f**ked up on any of the shots at any point, if this bothers you - bite me. I'll be taking requests on Sunday. I have 35 Cron, 50 Lux and 75 Cron with the Novoflex adapter (thanks K-H) -----------
dwbell Posted November 21, 2013 Share #2530 Posted November 21, 2013 Initial (subjective) feeling after what, 3 hours of dicking around the house. A7R > M240 in all things modern camera A7R > M240 in sensor IQ 35cron > 35FE in IQ A7R+35Cron > M240+35Cron The Sony with Novoflex and M lenses is astonishingly good. Lux wide open shows vignetting, to be expected, correctable in LR. Ease of focus and operation with M lenses is excellent.
guidomo Posted November 21, 2013 Share #2531 Posted November 21, 2013 I'm not impressed with the corners of my M wides on the A7R either, so will have to do more tests to decide whether to keep that camera. However, I think it really shines with longer lenses and at low light. This was shot in near darkness: I could not read ANY of the text on the CDs. I shot handheld with a Nocti at f/1 and ISO was set to 12800 and speed was 1/30s (underexposed by 1.7 stops and pulled back up by 1.5 stops in PS afterwards). I know it doesn't get less scientific than this, but perhaps it shows what that sensor IS actually good at. Welcome, dear visitor! k-hawinkler Posted November 21, 2013 Share #2532 Posted November 21, 2013 Ok, try this? https://www.dropbox.com/sh/seznnrgt40oyslj/wFF5IC90bf They are uploading, should be 12 in total so be patient. I've used Adobe camera raw 8.something to convert the ARW to DNG already. They are in the appropriately named A7R vs M240 folder. ----------- Caveats. (Unless you're after an M9P in very good condition that is) Many thanks. There seem to be 10 images. #06 and #08 seem to be missing.
Guido Posted November 21, 2013 Share #2533 Posted November 21, 2013 dwbell, Thanks for taking the time and effort to provide a Dropbox link to your RAW/DNG test images. I have to say that the A7R with 35FE is pretty damn impressive! I believe you assigned incorrect filenames to the 'Cron files. A7R35Cron... has the image dimensions and EXIF data of Leica M M24035Cron... ditto, of A7R Thanks for the uploads!
3D-Kraft.com Posted November 21, 2013 Share #2534 Posted November 21, 2013 Oh, more WATE images. Leica WATE on Sony A7R - a set on Flickr As you know one of my favorite lenses on several cameras. Link to album is still valid but images were replaced / updated. Now you see first a set of f/8 images at 16, 18 and 21mm at better weather conditions developed from RAW (using the distortion profile in Adobe Camera Raw and some vignette reduction) and afterwards actual out-of-cam-JPEGs (all in full resolution) also at f/4 and f/5.6. BTW the reddish tint in images 09 - 12 is easily corrected by setting Temperature to 4000 and Tint to -30 or something in that neighborhood. I used the Adobe Standard Profile. For those of us that already have a bunch of nice M optics, we will end up forever shooting the M cameras and getting great image quality, but always looking over the fence at what cool stuff the the other manufacturers have come up with.Does that mean that the consensus (educated consensus?) now is that the A7R facility for individual lens adjustments will not be effective in solving the problems of wide-angle M-lenses on this camera? Has there been an adequate test of that adjustment facility? Or are you both jumping to conclusions in the tradition of this overly long thread? (It has become long enough to have a tradition). As for RickLeica's comment, please don't use the royal "we," as there are those who are, and will remain, happy with their Leica M digital cameras because of the unique image quality and color rendition and won't really be that interested in "looking over the fence" at higher-tech cameras? — Or should I say that at least M9/MM stalwarts will feel that way (but here I'm falling into the trap of also using the royal "we"). —Mitch/Chiang Mai Looking for Baudelaire [WIP]
