Hello,

I know the Leica DMR only takes a maximum of 4GB cards, but I bought 2 SanDisk Extreme 4GB cards and they both do not work, not even after formatting in the camera...

Any thought?

I also have a 2GB SanDisk Ultra 2 which does work... but it's hard to get these memory cards these days...

And in my M9 I only use 16GB SanDisk Extreme cards, so I'm out of luck I guess?!

Thanks Jaap, they only do not ship to The Netherlands, but I found some at conrad.nl why is it possible to use 4GB cards? according to the 1.3 firmware? But isn't it actually possible... I'm getting some 2GB cards so it's ok... but just wondering.

JIP, the best card to use with the DMR is the Transcend SD 150x Secure Digital Card. I have a dozen of these cards, which I rotate for use with my DMR. They ALWAYS work. I have used 2 of these cards that went through three different washing machine cycles & they still work fine. The major problem is finding them, Transcend doesn't make them any longer! You can always find them on Ebay, but expect to pay double the usual cost. I thought about selling my DMR, but I just can't! It still remains a very unique piece of equipment & the Imacon sensor renders amazingly subtle colors with the 80R & 35R Summilux lenses. The files from the M9-P using the M equivalents of these lenses don't even come close.

Good Luck. Keep searching on Ebay. It's worth the trouble. BTW, I would suggest that your next R lens purchase be a prime. Shoot wide open for a while until you master that lens. Only then will you have a real starting point to getting the most out of these lenses. All the best. Ben

Thanks allot for the reply Ben! I am using 2GB Ultra 2 SanDisk cards now, they work until now and can carry 96 RAW files. I have 2 of them now for only 8 euro! Haha someone sold them second hand. And I already had 2 so now I have a total of 4 cards :)

I wil be buying a prime next time!

I have a stash of Sandisk ultra II 2GB cards and a handful of Transcend 2GB cards too. I have about 30 in total, inc some new unopened ones. If you are planning to keep the DMR for a while, I would suggest you buy some 2GB Sandisk cards now. They will disappear in the near future.

Here is a source at under GBP10 a card.

SanDisk 2GB Ultra SD Memory Card from Sound Exposure - The leading Pro Audio and Broadcast Superstore

Or try the Sandisk ultra plus 2GB cards from the Sandisk store @ USD12.99

  • 3 weeks later...

I just tried a Fujifilm 2GB SD card in a DMR and it works fine ... so will order some more ...they are £5.27 each from Fuji UK Shop. Not sure who made these for Fuji or if Fuji manufacture them - but they're unlikely to be cheapo nondescript cards.

I think the only issue regarding a 2GB card is that it just doesn't give you enough storage capacity. Maybe it's just me, but when I get into a groove, the last thing I want to happen is to have to stop shooting & change out the card.

The other important issue is that you MUST keep your batteries in tiptop shape. The DMR must have a relatively fast cache, because I can keep shooting, and then just let them get recorded on the Transcend cards.

I've got 4 SanDisk Ultra II 2GB cards, and usually only need 1 or 2 for a day, this is while I'm on vacation in Greece... And take quite allot of pictures... Yesterday I shot film in the R8 1 roll and I could manage too, so I guess I could actually do fine with one 1 GB card.
