I find it rather irritating as well. I had to pay KEH by bank transfer and pay extortionate bank charges. Admittedly a few years ago.

At least within the Eurozone there are no separate bank charges any more when paying by SEPA.

Except in the UK. An online transfer to Europe from my Euro account, where you set the whole thing up yourself, is £10 (or the Euro equivalent) for a slow transfer (2-4 days) or £30 for a rapid (1-2 days). Aren’t our banks wonderful :(

The first step to moving out of the EU? :p

As a matter of fact when you use an ordinary foreign transfer instead of SEPA you still have to pay over here as well, as the bank will have to add the IBAN manually. I guess your bank has not got its IT set up to the latest standards.

This is typical Leica Mayfair behaviour

They appear to completely ignore the so-called 'waiting list' and give anything to anyone who just happens to be there with the cash when the item is in the shop.

I know .... because I have been on both sides of this on several occasions.

I was one of the first on their waiting list for an M from the initial announcement and have yet to receive my phone call or email......

Having been caught out before when I mysteriously vanished from the 'list' I had one on order from Clifton Cameras and received one at the beginning of March ......

Order from somewhere more reliable in future.....

I have also ordered an adapter in May last year from a main London dealer and I am on a long waiting list. I do not know where I am on their list, they have a deposit against other items and as far as I am aware they only received a few [their words] adapters in November - its a case of a long wait with them as well.

OT but, is it really the case that Leica Mayfair don't accept credit cards?? Surely you're joking. WTF?

Thank you for your comment. I see that my post yesterday has stirred up quite a response.

I can confirm again that Leica Mayfair would not take my UK credit card and they have set up an account for me for payment by bank transfer process so that I can send money when [and if ] the adapter every arrives. I will not pay them in advance nor on this occasion will I send them a deposit. I have no credit card issues - I live 150 miles from London and I am not making a day trip to collect a small box from the shop when payment by card and delivery by post is a sensible alternative.

I know that this payment process is a bit of a pain but I can make immediate account to account transfers in the UK and as far as I am aware there are no charges for my online transfers. I just hope that this seemingly endless wait is over before they put the prices up again for something they have never made available.

Thinking about my last comment and about Leica making special adapter editions / finishes as a celebration of the first delivery of the Leica M in February 2013, what do forum members favour, should it be Black Paint, White, Chrome or maybe Leica M-E Blue, perhaps we could have an a la carte selection, or a new design by a famous car designer?

Jaap,

.....not IT problems, it’s just naked greed on the part of the UK banks. My bank’s continuing large losses are funded 80+% by the taxpayer, whilst the obscene bonuses continue to be paid to the traders, pretty much unchecked.

You can only do these transfers with the IBAN/BIC numbers, which are verified electronically as you enter them, so the bank does not even have that excuse for their extortionate charges. I doubt whether a human is involved at all and I don’t think there would be any re-keying of data.

Dave,

I presume you checked to see if they took a debit card. I know my local Porsche garage does not take credit cards but does take debit cards.

It is all a bit silly when a small operation like Malcolm Taylor’s Leica Service will happily take cards, as he did on Thursday from me.

Hi Wilson.

On 25th November this year Leica Mayfair confirmed that I was next on the supply list and they indicated that they would find a way to send the item to me when it became available. I sent them phone details and stated that I would pay them by credit card and also pay for postage. It is I think a reasonable assumption that today most companies have a way of accepting distant payment. But to be specific I did not ask about Debit cards - and they did not offer this payment process either.

They replied to me by e-mail that they would accept payment by BACS - this what they sent -

We can take payment remotely and post it to you. There would be a £5 but we can only accept remote payment via BACS transfer. When the item arrives we can send you our bank account details and deliver it once the payment clears. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, but it is a measure we are currently undertaking to ensure the protection of your payment.

To me this is offering payment only by bank transfer and declining credit card payments and as at this stage there was no transaction to complete [no adapter to buy] I have taken their Bank details for the payment and am awaiting Leica advice of availability for this item.

I think it’s clear that they would only supply once they had the money in their account – but this is no different to other suppliers taking money by card and the sending items by Post.

Leica dealers in London and elsewhere have taken payment from me by card and sent the items - so I see the Leica response above as not being that helpful - but I would be prepared to put up with it if they would supply the goods.

Hope this clarifies my process.

I ordered the handgrip, finger loop and M-R Adapter from Clifton Cameras this April and all arrived last week. :p

Although they take a small deposit they are reliable, helpful and a pleasure to deal with.

Ordering form a large dealer has proved to be useless as you end up on a huge waiting list..... but they often get no more pro-rata stock from Leica than the small dealers.

The general consensus when this was discussed before was to order through a smallish Leica dealer in Italy......

They had not the slightest hesitation in taking CC details in payment for a Noctilux over the phone .....:D

I'm confused. Do Leica Mayfair accept credit cards if you are there in person but not if you are buying remotely?

It's all academic for me because wild horses wouldn't make me buy there. In my experience, they are arrogant, ignorant and useless. I much prefer to support an independent dealer.

As you can see from my post they [Leica Mayfair] said that [in an e-mail] -

I can only say that my experience suggests that they do not accept cards for items that have to be sent / posted. I could see nothing on their site saying they take cards.

Given the number of comments on the performance of Leica Mayfair on this forum and the possible inconsistencies in what they say to us, maybe next time I will shop elsewhere.

However if I am the next on the list for the adapter it seems reasonable to stay with the process until I find out otherwise.

No experience of buying any stuff at Mayfair, but the 2 times I have visited for other reasons, they have been helpful.

Once for (free) sensor cleaning on my M and MM, and yesterday to attend the complimentary Leica Akademie 3 hour MM course.

It was very well run and although I thought I knew the camera pretty well, I learned some useful stuff, and met some other MM owners which is always good. I even got a replacement foot cover for my EVF2, gratis.

We also had great weather for the 'field' phase around the streets of Mayfair. I spotted Sir Paul Smith, but missed the shot....

Oh, and they do decent coffee........better than my iPhone shots anyway!

Have any of you asked UK dealers about taking Paypal? You can set up credit cards on your Paypal account and the receiver has no idea how you paid into Paypal nor cares really. The only downside is the 3% charge the receiver must pay Paypal and who usually on-charges the purchaser this amount.

I charge as much as possible in order to get frequent flyer miles to keep my French wife happy with annual trips to Europe and relatives.

I am aware of this and use it with E-bay as someone making a purchase and it works well.

However in the Photo-supplier world I guess that some suppliers will not accept PayPal. Red Dot cameras in London state on their website that they do not accept PayPal.

Lou,

Platinum commercial sellers pay very much less than 3% - I believe it is around 1.25% or for a very large seller even less. Foto-Mundus were telling me that last week when I was trying to trade the Paypal fee for the insured next day courier charge on a Noctilux. Like you I want to get points to spend on Easyjet flights backwards and forwards from Marseille to Gatwick, for when I have to come back to the UK for a few days.

we can add inability to write plain English to their list of failings. The first sentence suggests exactly the opposite to what is being discussed here and what's the reference to £5 about? I have no idea.

The nightmare for me is that this string of Leica-owned shops proliferate to the extent that independent Leica dealers are put at a disadvantage to force them out of business leaving me no option but to deal with Bruton Place.
