waiting for the R to M adapter

I've ordered the Novoflex LEM/PENT-NT adapter (for Pentax K) from B&H. They don't have these in stock ordinarily, so there's a week or more wait for it to arrive there. And there's apparently a series of holiday closures over the next few weeks, so no telling when it might ship.

They did not know whether this item has 6-bit coding or not. Sent an email query to HP Marketing Corp, the US distributor, with no reply yet.

I recall that B&H uses a facility in the old Brooklyn Navy Yard, and coincidentally John Milich has his shop there too. He could mill the 6-bit coding if needed, and send it on to me. Less cross-country thrashing, as I'm on the west coast.

I've got a bunch of fine Pentax lenses, including the three original FA Limiteds, but no prospects for R lenses, so this adapter should be useful and fun...

A retirement present from my young staff some 10 years ago. :):)

Well I can chime in here in a somewhat official capacity. Novoflex is now making the LEM/LER adapter with 6-bit coding to allow the R lens profile menu to be selected on the M (Typ 240). The part numbers have not changed, so the only way to know for sure that you are getting the adapter is to order one and check. At Dale Photo at least, anytime that I order the adapters from our rep at HP Marketing (the USA distributor for Novoflex) I specifically request that they only ship me coded adapters. I know that they check each one before sending them along. Going forward, we will only order the non-coded adapters if someone requests one.

This means the only difference between the Novoflex LEM/LER and the Leica R Adapter M is that the Leica-made adapter has a tripod foot and the Novoflex does not. Of course anything about build quality, the quality of the coding, or the solidity of the lens-adapter connection between the two products is purely conjecture until the Leica adapter ships and I can evaluate the two side-by-side.

I am curious, for those who now have the coded Novoflex adapter, if anyone sees a difference in the resulting image when an R lens profile is selected. I've yet to see any difference, but that's only after a few shots. I don't have any wide angle R lenses to test, where I imagine the differences would be most notable. I also want to mention that for some reason I was under the impression that the R lens menu pops up as soon as the adapter is mounted. This is not the case (again, only with my brief initial testing). You need to go to the lens detection menu in the M (automatic will be greyed out), select Manual, and then the R lens list will be brought up.

On my M240 the behaviour is as follows with an adapter coded 110111. If you mount such an adapter with lens coding set to automatic or manual, the camera will detect that an R or SLR lens is mounted and default to the R lens previously selected in the R lens menu, which shows up if you press Info. However it will only show the R lens menu on the LCD if you press Menu and then Set twice. This is exactly the behaviour I want and would not be looking for it to be altered.

I wonder if differences occur due to the frame lines of the adapter. The Novoflex (28/90 frame lines) is not like the Leicina one which brings up 50/75.

The Leica dapater at Photokina had 50/75 frame lines if I recall.

Lou,

Isn't it the other way round. Novoflex 50/75: Leitz 28/90?

I have just checked my Novoflex LEM/CONT and it is definitely 50/75. I think all LEM Novoflexes are 50/75.

You are correct and I stand corrected, but you get my point about behavioral differences.

Lou,

I suspect it is not as organised as deliberate differences. I think programming sloppiness is the answer. After all Leica told me categorically in February that nothing except the 28/90 framelines would bring up the R lens menu. :(

I just hope this does not get "updated" in the mythical FW update.

Perhaps you recall that Jono thougth that was the case too, but soon learned that it was the coding that brought up the possibility to see the R lens list and not the frame lines. That would be a disaster if the update in the next few years (just joking) might change all that. Hopefully, if there is an update along these lines, they will not make any changes until their adapter hits the street whenever that might come about.

Lou,

Thanks. Here is a winning strategy. Works like a charm every time!

Piss off your customers by disabling functionality they are already used to.

Lou,

If Leica change the R lens menu requirement to 28/90 only, there are going to be a lot of very unhappy Novoflex adapter owners (Canon, Nikon, Contax, Oly, Pentax, etc etc) out there. I have a Lolli Contax to M adapter with a 28/90 framelines mount but it is nowhere near the quality of the Novoflex and allows too much lens movement (Contax bayonet too loose).
