John -

I suggest you read Barbara's trip notes on Botswana (Barbara & Stu's Excellent Vacations) which are shorter than most of her trip notes - She was too busy when we returned. Most of the wildlife photos are with DMR/R8/2X/80-200 (Barbara & Stu's Excellent Vacations)

Have a wonderful time - Botswana is a very special place.

Hi, my M240 is going to arrive within a few days, and I like to buy the 4.0 80-200 R lens.

In order to shoot longer I was thinking of getting an APO 2x extender between the R-M converter and the R lens.

Now I see that there are huge price differences between the x2 APO extenders, ranging from 250 euro (yes it is an APO) and 1500 Euro.

My question: are there several types of this extender on the market, and why are there so big price differences (ROM?)

Looking forward to your opinions!

John

I support what Jaap says. For the past few years a used APO 2x extender has cost between £400 and £500 regardless of ROM or otherwise.

Pete.

That seems to be my experience as well.

In the US they typically seem to go for $700 to $800.

Some above that range, some below.

1500 Euro is ridiculous, 250 should be a beater. No, there is only one version optically. ROM is irrelevant on the M.

Rom or None Rom is indeed not relevant for the m240, but there are 2 types, and the Rom Version goes for nearly double prices.

I think i will buy the 249€ one.......

Thx

Agreed - ROM is simply not needed for using R lenses on the new M, and there is no point in buying an Apo ROM..

However, for using ROM lenses on an R8/9, there is a reason whiy the ROM extender is significantly more expensive. On the extender, It's not just a passive ROM chip with info stored on it; rather it's a full-blown microprocessor that talks to the lens on one side, re-computes information to take account of the change of focal length and aperture stop, and passes the modified information on to the camera. I find it very useful.

Hello Extender Lovers,

Here are some examples taken with R8-DMR In Davos, Switzerland, from my balkony:

You can see even the last one, including a non Apo 2x Extender is worthwile to use.

If of interest, I have also used the 2xApo Extender on Apo 2.8x100 and Apo 3.4x180

1) Apo 4x280

2) Apo 4x280+1.4xApoExt

3) Apo 4x280+2xApoExt

4) Apo 4x280+1.4xApoExt+2xApoExt

5) Apo 4x280+1.4xApoExt+2xApoExt+2xExt

Thanks for this, very impressive!

Do you maybe have an example with a comparison of your 280mm with the x2 APO and the non-APO version?

John

I am actually in Davos, however, I wait for nice weather to take Pictures for this comparison.

Note: when I took Picture nr. 2: 280+1.4Ext I have noted that even on a steady tripod, there is a vertical unsharpness.

The remaining pictures I took with mirror prerelease.

At this Occasion, I also show the remaining pictures taken with Apo 2x extender,

Note the Apo1.4 extender does not fit these lenses:

1) Apo 2.8x100

2) Apo 2.8x100+2xApoExt

3) Apo 3.4x180

4) Apo 3.4x180+2xApoExt

Hello John,

Here is the example.

1) Apo 4x280 with 2xApoExt

2) Apo 4x280 with 2xExt

However I could not see a real difference even at full size, may be because both Pictures were taken at diapragm 8.0

Thanks Peter

very interesting comparison.

I will give it another night of sleep, as my R 180 2.8 still has to be adapted from Nikon to Leica. My Novoflex adapter arrived today, and IT IS INDEED 6-BIT CODED!!! Surprice!

  • 3 weeks later...

My experiences mirror Peter Bailey's when comparing the R-2x versus the R-2x APO (I have both).

I've only had my M a short while, and have only compared the 2x vs. 2x APO on my Telyt-R 500mm mirror lens (tripod mounted). There appears to be a slight difference in coloration but no noticeable difference in sharpness, although the "acuity" of the images with the APO 2x appears a bit better.

Oddly, I think I got better focus at 1,000 mm than at 500!

For comparison and if you're interested, you can download the test images in high-resolution DNG format here:

The really wonderful thing with the M, I'm finding, is that I can use my R lenses that have been stored in a Lowe Pro camera bag for years. I bought the 500mm Telyt-R new and can't remember when I last used it.
