Well, as the future firmware is in the beta phase, it appears to me that it is rather doubtful that Leica can take all these wishes into account in this iteration; as Leica does read this forum, I am sure at least some of them will end up on a to-do list.

Any news about the next M firmware mid-September? VF-4 compatibility?
You're kidding, right?
You're answering, right?

No, I'm not, because I think it's particularly silly to ask for compatibility with another brand's product.

But wait! When thinking about it ... if Leica Camera is planning to eventually bring out the electronic viewfinder currently known as Olympus VF-4 under their own brand then it'll make sense to enable the firmware to handle it now. Otherwise, future customers buying the new Leica EVF X won't be able to use it right away ... no, it's better to have the camera's firmware updated before releasing a new accessory item which depends on the firmware update.

So—no, it's not entirely silly to hope for VF-4 compatibility. Sorry for assuming you were kidding. :)

But then, it still is pointless to ask for preliminary information. Those who know cannot tell.

Why not just release the VF-4 compatibility FW update at the same time as the VF-4 is released? If it ever is.

Well I have already the VF-4 for use on an OMD camera.

It would be an additional incentive for me to get the M if I could use the VF-4 there as well.

Not supporting the VF-4 on the M would be penny-wise but pound-foolish on Leica's part IMHO.

Yes- but Leica follows their own path. For the EVF2 they used the same supplier as Olympus, but there is no guaranty that they will do so for a hypothetical successor. I could imagine that a dedicated EVF would be more interesting for them - if only for commercial reasons.

Andy,

I just hope they do. The VF-4 would be transformational on the M240, it is that much better than the VF-2 (wrongly called the VF-3 in my previous post). The screen is nearly 50% bigger in area, brighter, sharper and the eye sensor makes it far more usable. It is no bigger on the M240 than the EFV-2. Also the click stop diopter adjustment does not get knocked out of kilter like the VF-2, especially if you have the big eye cup on the VF-2 like I do. I am using SLR lenses, both R and Contax, quite a lot on my M240 and the VF-4 would make the M240 into a true DSLR when you want it, without affecting its very considerable abilities as an RF. The dream machine that every professional photographer would want.

Why re-invent the wheel? Once you have used a VF-4 the answer would be yes please Leica and as soon as possible.

They are not inventing anything - that job is done by the Chinese suppliers, both for Olympus and Leica. The only thing Leica does is formulate specifications - and the EVF2 was obviously available off the shelf.

Jaap,

I am sure Epson who make both the VF2 and VF4 would be very happy to supply Leica with a Leica branded VF4. :)

I assume that the new VF will not be supported by the new FW.

Main reason is the current stock of VF with the Leica logo on.

Nobody would buy these old versions anymore, so there would be an unsellable stock of EVF2 both at retailer side and at the Leica factory.....

I don't see the issue. They discount the old one and sell the new one at the same or higher price. And they make such a profit on the Leica branded EVF2 that it doesn't really matter if they keep a couple in stock for whenever they need to do a warranty swap.

Even with the 30 fps refresh rate of the camera? Hard to believe Wilson but i wish i were wrong.

Thanks. In my experience the VF-4 on my OM-D E-M5 is spectacular at the normal setting.

I believe that means 60 Hz. When choosing the high setting spatial resolution is degraded to support a higher frame rate which can result in nasty aliasing. I don't think I can choose to operate the VF-2 or VF-4 on the E-M5 at 30 Hz, but I may be wrong. Please correct me if I got this wrong. Thanks.

Hi Wilson,

Hmm. Are you sure?

Going from 1.x.x.x to 2.x.x.x seems to promise a brand new experience! :D

If true I might accept my silver M soon. :)

I talked to a Beta tester last week and he said it was "2", so I would say Wilson is correct.

I have no experience with those cams sorry but the fast refresh rate of any EVF is useless if that of the camera is slow i guess. Again i wish i were wrong.

Thanks. I agree with that.

I know for sure that for the VF-2 on the E-M5 normal is 60 Hz and high is 120 Hz.

As I couldn't find any numbers for the VF-4 I am assuming normal is 60 Hz.

Beta testers never talk.
