I often shoot under difficult and changing light conditions. Using Auto ISO with a minimal shutter speed of 1/125 prevents blurring when people are speaking and moving their heads slightly. However there are always moments when you can use a longer shutter speed, when your motive doesn't move. With a M9 or a M8 you can simply turn the shutter speed dial to 1/60s and you prevent ISO to go too high. After the shot you can switch back very quickly. This even works with a M8. There is no need to take such a good feature away from the newest model, only because some Leica owners have cried out too loud that they are not capable of using it.

That is one use. There is another use, equally important to other users.

The reason I never used auto-ISO on either M8 or M9 was because it was poorly implemented - for my use. Now, on the M, I have switched it on.

But using long teles I will need the implementation you indicate.

Both options should - and will be- offered.

Is there any chance of this firmware changing the way the M does white balance and the color profile?

This seems to have become less of an issue for people, and the so called weird skin color issue seems to disappeared. Telling is also that nobody mentions it in this thread about the firrmware. A couple months back this would have been one of the biggest things that the firmware should fix.

Personally the color is still a problem for me, so I would love to be surprised by a firmware that changes the camera profile. Not here to start the discussion about whether or not there is a color issue. Thats something to just agree to disagree on. :).

Leica has indicated via a number of people, that AWB will be improved on the next FW release, so this was taken as a given, that it would be. I think the only reason people are not mentioning it, (it has not improved by itself) is that they assume it is coming. I also feel that a lot of folks have now made themselves profiles for their RAW convertors, which provide adequate if not brilliant colour balance.

Thanks.

Too bad.

The AWB was never my problem.

But I find it too bad that Wilson is probably right that even if Leica addresses the color issue it will probably be kinda like what people have already achieved by making their own profiles. Arguable "adequate if not brilliant colour balance", but probably just wont be not my cup of tea.

In-camera WB settings are always compromises. The next firmware update will probably improve them but they will stay so. If you want the best possible colour rendition, just build a personal profile or pray that the next compromise will do miracles for you.

Probably no different than dozens of other picture characteristics that one can adjust in PP to suit personal style and preferences. And, as others have said, you can make your own profiles or presets to minimize processing time.

It's all about a good starting point. The rest is up to you.

I agree that they need to look at start-up time and battery drain as priorities.

One simple thing that they could fix is with exposure bracketing on, record the EV offset in the Exif data, so that HDR programs can detect bracketed sequences more easily, and so that it is easier to see what the EV offset of the current pic is in Lightroom, (Most cameras already do this.)

They also need to put the level function into a more accessible place (even on the Set screen would be an improvement).

Finally, when you are in auto-detect 6-bit coding mode and the lens that you attach has no such coding, the camera should give some sort of warning, so that those of us who are forgetful and have a mixture of coded and non-coded lenses can use auto-detect mode without trouble. The warning could be a beep, flashing viewfinder indication, message on the rear screen, etc.

Detecting a non-coded lens would be a great step forward. The logical action would be to bring up the manual lens selection menu automatically.

Non coded lenses are detected by the camera already but photogs who don't want lens detection would be bothered by this unwanted menu i guess, at least i would. Increasing the number of user profiles would be more useful IMHO.

I assume that the new VF will not be supported by the new FW.

Main reason is the current stock of VF with the Leica logo on.

Nobody would buy these old versions anymore, so there would be an unsellable stock of EVF2 both at retailer side and at the Leica factory.....

John

Leica has no stock at all :)

It depends on the level of fool-proofing one wants to incorporate.

Let's just hope the beta tester are making a good job. I used to be a beta tester for the M8 and M9's firmwares too, but this time I'm not in.

I hope they're concentrating on startup timing, since it's just a pain in the a** with the M240.

Maurizio - whatever happens with the FW I think that the start up time issue is solved every time by formatting your SD card with SD Formatter 4. https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/

It really makes a huge difference in my experience.

Best

.....the start up time issue......

Does this "issue" vary between cameras? I use a fast 8gb card and have not noticed a problem - switch on and its stopped blinking by time I am ready to press set button to check settings.

That .... although you make think it is quicker ..... reprersents the average 2 second start up time.

That 'appears' to be normal for most people using most 8-32gb reasonably quick cards.

Some people have inexplicable 4 second + start-ups ..... which are often ....but not always ....fixed by re-formatting cards with SD formatter etc.

I personally have always had fast start up times with little variation with card type, size and formatting.

The camera to camera or user to user variation remains a mystery ........

The main grumble is that Leica states 'approx 1 second' ... and some peoples style of shooting needs almost instant response...

Chris, unfortunately not.

There's a long thread on this forum on this regards. By Using 32GB Sandisk, Lexar or Panasonic, a mere 2.5 seconds startup time is the best I could get, even after formatting with SDformatter 4.0.

In the end, it seems like someone is around 1", but only with 16GB cards, and still no evidence recorded for that.
