jaapv Posted August 14, 2013 Share #1 Posted August 14, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I was walking with my M around my neck, they had been surfacing the sidewalk and failed to remove the gravel from the cobbles. So I slipped, fell, the M slammed on its back... hard....really hard:eek: Dent in the thumbwheel thumbie so it ran a bit bumpy, LCD Gorilla glass smashed (Leica should feed their primates more vitamins...), rear bodyshell deeply grooved, buttons damaged, some brassing on the edge of the bottom plate/. But virtually no damage to the paint, and the camera didn't miss a beat, rangefinder spot-on, this is one tough cookie. If I had been on the road I would just have sellotaped the LCD window and carried on shooting. My knee and ankle were less functional:o However, off to Solms to be put it to rights. jaapv Posted August 14, 2013 Author Share #3 Posted August 14, 2013 Thanks Erik. Just a bit of a lame duck and a silly sight getting in and out my car. I hope CS will be not too slow. There seem to be no parts shortages. I really need the camera in a week or four.
LeicaPassion Posted August 14, 2013 Share #4 Posted August 14, 2013 Really sorry to hear about your mishap. The M can be repaired. Sometimes our bodies cannot be fixed. I hope Solms' CS will come through for you.

sm23221 Posted August 15, 2013 Share #10 Posted August 15, 2013 Hope your knee and ankles recover. Much easier to fix an M than body parts.
Photoskeptic Posted August 15, 2013 Share #11 Posted August 15, 2013 Ya know the older you get the more stuff like this happens. Just saying... I'm in that group, btw
StephenPatterson Posted August 15, 2013 Share #12 Posted August 15, 2013 Very, very sorry to hear this and glad you were not injured more severely. I appreciate your restraint in choice of title, for if it had happened to me the title would not have been "Bit depressed", but something like "F*@king P*ss#d Off"...or something similar. Is your M240 covered by some sort of Passport Warranty or just the normal international warranty?
MarkP Posted August 15, 2013 Share #13 Posted August 15, 2013 Very sad story. Everyone's nightmare. However, you seem to have escaped with relatively minor injuries which could have been worse. Is the camera insured?

k-hawinkler Posted August 15, 2013 Share #16 Posted August 15, 2013 Hi Jaap, I am sorry that happened and wish you a speedy and complete recovery. No doubt, Leica will take care of your M.
Karl G Posted August 15, 2013 Share #17 Posted August 15, 2013 Really, really sorry. Please look and reflect upon alternatives that involved the possibility of far more severe traumatic injury such as hip fracture and intracranial bleeding. If you hit your head, be aware of any changes in your consciousness and have a family member aware and with you. Best wishes on getting your new camera back in a much improved condition after the recent mishap.

jaques Posted August 15, 2013 Share #19 Posted August 15, 2013 sorry to hear of this terrible accident! Sometime I look down at my camera and realise how valuable an object it is to have swinging around my neck on a string... anyhoo- this incident reminds me why the first thing I do with my Leica cameras is stick a hard shatter proof screen over the LCD- sapphire, gorilla or no. I think of it as a sacrificial screen. These screens only touch the glass at the edges and I think they would distribute the force of any knock, possibly shatter and hopefully save the screen beneath. Yes, but it is unlikely that a screen cover would have protected the camera in this situation.
