}{B Posted August 4, 2013 Share #1 Posted August 4, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Since changing my broadband package I no longer have access to any form of online image hosting. I was thinking of using SmugMug so that I can not only display photos taken with my Leicas but also my many others taken with different cameras. I'm not looking to sell any of the photos just have a site that people can browse. It appears that SmugMug has a Power User account for $60 per year that includes right click protection. If I could upload to them directly from Lightroom that would be ideal. Does anyone use SmugMug and are they recommended?

topoxforddoc Posted August 4, 2013 Share #2 Posted August 4, 2013 I use zenfolio. Am very happy with the service. Charlie
pico Posted August 4, 2013 Share #3 Posted August 4, 2013 right click protection Aside - it does not protect.
kdriceman Posted August 5, 2013 Share #4 Posted August 5, 2013 Zenfolio also. Extremely good, very professional in my opinion and reasonably priced.
harvey999999 Posted August 5, 2013 Share #5 Posted August 5, 2013 I've just moved to Ipernity.com, and like it - it has an emphasis on security which some other sites don't have. I used to be on Flickr but gave that away because it's new design is so ugly. I was on Smugmug in the past but found it didn't particularly encourage 'community', though it's ok if you just want to store your photos.
harvey999999 Posted August 5, 2013 Share #6 Posted August 5, 2013 I forgot to add that Ipernity.com protects from right-click screen grabs.
nggalai Posted August 5, 2013 Share #7 Posted August 5, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Right-click protection is very easy to circumvent, so I wouldn’t make my choice dependent on this feature alone. Rather change your image hoster’s settings to never show the original file size. I cap my images at about 3 megapixels and, in the case of flickr, I don’t upload full-res images to begin with. Personally, I’ve been a Smugmug user for many years. And I’m quite thrilled about the re-launch of a couple of days ago. Customisation has been high on Smugmug’s list before, but now it’s actually easy to do. The support staff is excellent, very responsive and friendly. Also, there’s no free account option which means you, as the user, are their primary source of income. You’re the customer, not the product to (eventually?) be sold. For Lightroom users, there’s a nifty Smugmug plugin by Jeff Friedl: Jeffrey Friedl's Blog There’s also an “official” plugin which used to be included with Lightroom 3, but it’s one-way only and not as configurable. What’s missing on Smugmug is a community. It’s more geared at the photo portfolio market à la Zenfolio. If you’re into community, discussions, groups etc., stick with flickr, ipernity, or 500px. Cheers, -Sascha
}{B Posted August 5, 2013 Author Share #8 Posted August 5, 2013 Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. I've looked at Zenfolio and it has its attractions being UK based and priced in Sterling. I had read that SmugMug was setting up a UK operation but haven't been able to find a site other than the U.S. main site.
kdriceman Posted August 5, 2013 Share #9 Posted August 5, 2013 Jeffrey Friedl also has a Zenfolio uploaded for LR which has worked flawlessly for me for years now.

pico Posted August 5, 2013 Share #11 Posted August 5, 2013 I forgot to add that Ipernity.com protects from right-click screen grabs. IMHO, that is a very bad idea because it is insulting, annoying, and blocks other uses of right-click - and besides it does not work.
Ecar Posted August 5, 2013 Share #12 Posted August 5, 2013 Zenfolio here as well - for a few years now. I have stopped using Flickr since their recent, appalling overhaul and haven't been entirely convinced by Ipernity. IMO, the main drawback of SmugMug in their latest iteration is the forced mention of their name in the footer, even if you are using your own domain name with the most expensive subscription plan. On the other hand, the revamped look and feel of SM is gorgeous - and definitely more attractive now than ZF, which looks a bit dated. But I have read in the forums that a similar revamp of ZF is due very shortly, so I'm staying with them.

You can disable both header and footer. See attachment – Customize Site, the green “Settings” button. I keep the footer turned on on saschaerni.com because I like the guys and if exposure helps them, so be it. Edit: Or do you mean by “forced” that, if you disable the footer, you’ll have the “image sharing by Smugmug” logo on your site? Cheers, -Sascha P.S. I went back from the “Portfolio” plan to the “Power” plan as it’s really a hassle for people in Switzerland ordering stuff via Smugmug. It’s probably better in the EU, with the choice of a British lab, but my customers either ask me to do prints, books and whatnot for them, or have their own service inside Switzerland they prefer. Yes, my understanding is that one way or the other you can't have a fully unbranded site, which I find rather annoying. Of course, YMMV. I also understand that one of the big complaints with SM is that you can't have self-fulfillment of your orders, as you point out - although this is not something I am concerned about, as I'm not interested in selling my pictures, I appreciate it can become an important issue for commercial work. But the new layout and design options offered by SM are definitely impressive.
nggalai Posted August 6, 2013 Share #15 Posted August 6, 2013 I also understand that one of the big complaints with SM is that you can't have self-fulfillment of your orders, as you point out - although this is not something I am concerned about, as I'm not interested in selling my pictures, I appreciate it can become an important issue for commercial work. It’s probably a non-issue for people living in the US, and a smallish one for UK citizens. But Switzerland not being in the EU … I had prints held up in customs and whatnot. Not fun. What I really like about Smugmug are password protected hidden galleries. That’s how I usually work; go to an assignment, upload photo set at full res into such a gallery, send login info to customer. It would have been swell if he/she also could order stuff right from the site, but as said, no dice here. So the Power account type is enough for me – gives me the custom URI, a portfolio page, and a place to create and store nice-to-look-at “contact sheets” for my customers. I still also use flickr, mind. Mostly for stuff that doesn’t fit the portfolio, or for quick sharing to forums etc. Cheers, -Sascha
johnwolf Posted August 7, 2013 Share #16 Posted August 7, 2013 Zenfolio here too. So impressed with its completeness, ease of use, and flexibility. Just couldn't be more pleased. John
