fotografr Posted July 23, 2006 Share #1 Posted July 23, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) This guy is a famous cartoonist whose work is often in the New Yorker and many other national magazines. He's a bit on the far side and is a good friend of mine. First image is M6, 50mm, Tri-X; second image is M6, 35mm, Tri-X. Both are scanned from prints. stuny Posted July 24, 2006 Share #4 Posted July 24, 2006 Brent - Both are superb, partly because they capture a touch of zanyness. #1 makes me think of Avedon's stark portraits in front of white backgrounds. I like #2 even better for its wider and richer tones, environment, and composition.
odd Posted July 24, 2006 Share #5 Posted July 24, 2006 Find both very strong and good portraits. Difficult to say which one is best. Like them both, but think #2 is my favourite. - om

Overgaard Posted July 24, 2006 Share #9 Posted July 24, 2006 I like them both. The first captures him very well as a 'brainy fun type,' the no 2 as a 'far out guy.' I of course must admire the daring light on no 2. He looks kind of young. I'm sure he would love to hear that. But it puzzles me, except it confirms my theory about that if you spend that much time copying life into drawings (because that takes more time and more insight than photography), you will not be the affect of it. Cartoonists simply stay young.
fotografr Posted July 24, 2006 Author Share #10 Posted July 24, 2006 Thanks very much. Andy--If you ever want a personally signed copy of one of his books for a special occasion, just let me know. He lives just a short distance from me. Thorsten--I think you just made his day.

dan_drabek Posted July 24, 2006 Share #13 Posted July 24, 2006 Brent, these are both nicely outside of the typical portrait. The second one is especially interesting. His expression is perfect. So, everyone here seems to know who he is except me. Help me out on this one. :-> DD

fotografr Posted July 25, 2006 Author Share #15 Posted July 25, 2006 So, everyone here seems to know who he is except me. Help me out on this one. :->DD Dan--He is P.S. Mueller. My all time favorite cartoon from him shows one of his naked stick-body type figures standing with arms hanging down at his side. The caption below reads, "Born again, but this time with six fingers." Of course, his stick figure has six fingers on each hand. I liked it so much that I got the original drawing from him and framed it for display at my house. I'll check with him and if he wouldn't mind I'll see if I can scan and post the cartoon.
