D&A Posted July 31, 2013 Share #41 Posted July 31, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm still waiting to hear from one of the Leica M-E users that mentioned their discrete mode is functioning perfectly without any recocking delay. I'm certain a few owners had posted this previously. Dave (D&A)

dlc43 Posted July 31, 2013 Share #42 Posted July 31, 2013 I have been the happy owner of a new M 240 for about a week. Now, I'm also an unhappy owner of a new M 240. That's because I'm a victim of the same problem under discussion here: Long hesitation after pressing the shutter in S mode--up to 5 seconds. I got around it by shifting to C mode. But that's not a solution. Clearly, there's a defect. Also in the firmware of the M 240? I have my doubts. I was able to briefly fix it by resetting the camera. After a short while it turned bad again. After talking with Tony Rose at Popflash, I arranged to return the camera to Leica. I was told by Leica Repair it has to go all the way back to Germany for some weeks. Instead, with Tony's help, I expect I'll be getting a new replacement camera soon. Unhappy to go through all this. Anyhow, it appears this problem is not limited to the M 9.
sblutter Posted August 2, 2013 Share #43 Posted August 2, 2013 FW 1.196 All 4 modes working perfectly Sorry for your aggravation
pfhrased Posted August 2, 2013 Share #44 Posted August 2, 2013 The camera should not wait. The buffer is there to accommodate the next activation (shutter release). Leica's firmware, and possibly their manufacturing and acquisitions protocols are broken. I'm not suggesting that's how it should work - just noting the synchronicity between the two things. I'd definitely prefer it didn't happen.

jevidon Posted March 14, 2014 Share #55 Posted March 14, 2014 I found a thread by member Hermanp who does have an archive of M9 upgrade downloads. He kindly mailed the set to me and in a matter of five minutes I reverse upgraded from 1.192 to 1.176. The camera now works as intended. I do have one thought on your delayed shutter re-cock and download time to the card. Somewhere in Leica literature I read that if you take an image in dim light, the automatic noise reduction takes over and doubles the process time. If a well lit image would download in 4 seconds, the dim image will take 8 seconds or more. Could that be part of the problem? As for the archive Herman sent to me, I assume since he already made the same offer to the rest of the forum, I hope he has no objection to my forwarding on the others. you will find his original posting on the thread entitled "Upgrade the firmware?". Click on the following link and reverse upgrade back to 1.176 and good luck. Or go to his posting and request the information offered. Jim https://app.box.com/s/ghhicqhwno7aubrbmhf6 Hi Jim (and others), I am glad the downloaded archive worked for you! As for others interested in these files: I am not sure Leica will be very happy when I make these files available for public download. I can see all kind of legal problems lurking here That is why I removed the entire folder from the cloud as soon as I received a message that you downloaded your file. When someone else would like to roll back the M9 firmware to an earlier version just drop me a PM and I will send you a link. The files are 7 MB, which may be too much for some mailboxes, so I prefer to store them in the cloud and send a link when someone is interested. Please don't copy the link in the forum, I don't want to get involved in legal issues.
stephen.w Posted March 18, 2014 Share #57 Posted March 18, 2014 My new M-E suffers from this problem, and the camera won't let me revert to firmware version 1.176 (as others have reported above). I've gone from using the "soft and discrete" shutter option, to just "soft" as a result. Is this a problem that affects all M9s running firmware version 1.196, or should I send the camera in and hope for a better replacement sample? hlockwood Posted March 22, 2014 Share #59 Posted March 22, 2014 Interesting. But how would that work? I think you are saying that if you have moved to 1.196 then there is something in that firmware which prevents you going back to 1.162 or earlier. But we know you can get back to 1.176 as people have done that. When 1.176 was first released a lot of people felt the write speeds were slower and so they went back to 1.162 successfully. So it was certainly possible to get back to 1.162 from 1.176. So once you have reverted to 1.176 from 1.196, what is to stop you getting back to 1.162 as you could previously? Are you suggesting that 1.196 makes a permanent change to the firmware of the M9 that remains even after reverting to 1.176? I believe the firmware is written to an EEPROM; the EE stands for electrically erasable (interconnects) on a Programable read-only memory (ROM) chip. It is indeed possible that an excursion, even to the previous version, would not be possible. Going back two versions requires more unused, but usable, real estate on the chip than the manufacturer might be willing to incorporate into the original design. So Jaap may be quite correct. Going back one, forward one, back two, may not be possible because too many bridges have been burned. Remember, "firm" is neither soft nor hard.
