I think the short answer is roughy this. Some number of the early models (420xxxx serial number range I think) exhibited this issue. Mine is in that range and never did. The fix is to send it to Leica and they'll fix it. I've read some people say the lens didn't come back quite the same, but I don't know the details on that. As for what to check, take a shot with the sun low in the sky coming in at an angle (think a backlit portrait). It'll flare obscenely if you have the problem. I would have expected this sort of a shot to reveal it, but I've never seen it in my early copy. jbl Photo Keywords: 50mm apo

This is totally wrong. Read the posts and discover what type of situation causes the CVF. It has nothing to do with the sun low in the sky. Your lens if one of the first lenses is at risk to flare if, you know what to look for.

Ok, now I am confused.

Is there a certain serial number from which we know the issue has been fixed at the factory ?

Other manufacturers officially tell customers which serial numbers are affected by a serious issue, and I expect Leica to do the same.

Lens production stopped for 3 weeks, so they had plenty of time to take note of the next serial number.

I don’t know whether it is just to confuse us like the random unique image ID on the M240 but Leica serial numbers now seem to be all over the place. Prior to about 1996, you could look up on a table and know pretty much exactly when your Leica item was made. I see nothing wrong with this approach but maybe the dealers did not like it, with the risk of getting stuck with or having to discount old stock.

I should have said that was roughly my understanding from following the thread loosely over its life.

I don't know if mine has the issue. All I know, is I've never had a photo with that lens that had and optical or technical problems that weren't due to me screwing something up.

It's an astoundingly good lens and as an engineer, I admire the confidence it took in Leica to pursue a goal like making this lens.

Same here with mine, it is one of the pre-fix versions or whatever that means. I have never had an issue that I did not cause myself. It is an incredible lens.
