wattsy Posted November 23, 2013 Share #561 Posted November 23, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Might be better if owners hang on to their 50 APO lenses until Leica have new lenses ready for exchange. Leica might also consider returning those held in repair.
Advertisement Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 Hi wattsy, Take a look here APO Summicron 50/2 ASPH: Central veiling flare / fogging. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
lct Posted November 23, 2013 Share #562 Posted November 23, 2013 I would never accept a repaired lens personally and would require a new lens with a current serial number. Collectors might think diffently though.
algrove Posted November 23, 2013 Share #563 Posted November 23, 2013 That is precisely what I am doing. Just a long wait.
marknorton Posted November 27, 2013 Share #564 Posted November 27, 2013 It's a bit of a mess, isn't it. We do not know what solution is being implemented and what the time implications are. After all the fawning over Peter Karbe when the lens first appeared, it turns out that this is not his finest hour.
tobey bilek Posted November 28, 2013 Share #565 Posted November 28, 2013 How long do you wait to be sure you received new production. Maybe there will be lots of demos or refurbished samples.
algrove Posted November 28, 2013 Share #566 Posted November 28, 2013 good question, but I would wait at least a year if that is your concern. At $7k+ per pop I cannot they will all be sold rapidly given the world's current state of the global economy.
platypus Posted November 28, 2013 Share #567 Posted November 28, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) This lens seems to be fast becoming the 'give a dog a bad name' lens.
ns_ng Posted November 29, 2013 Share #568 Posted November 29, 2013 How long do you wait to be sure you received new production. Maybe there will be lots of demos or refurbished samples. I checked with a Leica dealer and was told it might be the middle of 2014 before the 50 Apo is again available from the factory!
algrove Posted November 29, 2013 Share #569 Posted November 29, 2013 This lens seems to be fast becoming the 'give a dog a bad name' lens. I would not say so. It is that like many items of late they seem to release product into the marketplace and THEN find out there is something they missed. Such a shame for such a beautiful lens, at I still like mine a lot and use it as often as possible.

Such a shame for such a beautiful lens, at I still like mine a lot and use it as often as possible. I'm sure you are far more au fait with this issue than I am however, from reading this thread, I get a distinct impression of people really wanting the lens but now being too wary, even nervous, to commit to purchasing for fear they get a dud copy. algrove Posted November 29, 2013 Share #571 Posted November 29, 2013 I'm sure you are far more au fait with this issue than I am however, from reading this thread, I get a distinct impression of people really wanting the lens but now being too wary, even nervous, to commit to purchasing for fear they get a dud copy. Dee Here's my take on this matter. Those wanting an APO50, cannot even get one as any dealer will tell you they have not seen a new come forth in many, many months and from Europe to the US most will tell you to expect a one year wait, minimum. So I know of many who have put their names on a dealers list with the hope of getting it by the end of 2014, best scenario. Based on Leica executive comments they have a fix, but it is not a 1,2,3 fix and in fact the lenses do not go to CS Solms, they go back to the final assembly area, QC. Having visited the assembly area this last Summer I can tell you there are not many experienced people Leica can spare for this type of work. They have committed they will fix the problem and I, for one, believe they will fix every lens sent in to them in due time. To do this they must pull workers off assembly of other new lenses in order to "fix" the lenses of APO50 owners who have sent them in. Not the best solution, but a solution. Leica owners are used to waiting a long time for lenses since until very recently we could not even get most lenses without long waits. However, the major difference now versus waiting for a new lens is that we have paid for and briefly used a lens that is now back in Germany for repair and out of our hands. With this situation I do believe Leica should issue vouchers of some significant value like $150-250 for a discount on another Leica serial numbered product. They routinely give $150 vouchers when participating in Leica Akademie workshops, so why not do the same here where faithful customers have paid large sums and been put out by an error on Leica's part and not of their own doing. The one APO50 lens I currently have with me I do not want to send in until I get another one of mine back from Solms in order to compare what is different between the two. The one I have here performs exemplarily and frankly the one in Solms was sent in for reasons other than flaring, but got caught up in that mess while in Solms. It was one of the first 3 that came into the US.

algrove Posted November 30, 2013 Share #574 Posted November 30, 2013 erudolph and ario Do your work orders still confirm that your lenses are being "repaired" in the QC area?
Ario Arioldi Posted November 30, 2013 Share #575 Posted November 30, 2013 erudolph and ario Do your work orders still confirm that your lenses are being "repaired" in the QC area? Yes, actually the work order says "sent to the Quality Control Dept. for further examinations" and this confirms what was anticipated to me during the talks I had with Customer Care prior the shipment of my lens to Solms. ymc226 Posted December 3, 2013 Share #579 Posted December 3, 2013 APO Summicron 50/2 ASPH: Central veiling flare / fogging My brand new APO Summicron 50/2 ASPH produces flare / fogging under circumstances that should not cause problems, eg overcast sky, without any direct sunlight present. Shading the lens with the hand from above removes the fogging. Diglloyd.com has observed the same phenomenon, and suggests that inadequate blackening of the lens interior may be the culprit. Looking into the lens one can see two silvery rings that could reflect light. Below is a photo of the rings taken with my iPhone. I bought my 50AA earlier this year and haven't used it but a few times without incident. Looking at my lens, I don't see the silvery rings that Pajamies showed in his earlier post. Every component seems to be black or "blackened." Have there been any lenses that left the factory without the silvery rings and that have not been "fixed" by Leica to have experienced the central veiling flare?
