very rich! love this in b&w, how crisp it is, in focus for such an active little creature, and how well the bokeh (delicious) works to contrast the subject.

Hi drsamj,

do you ever make use of the built in flash or a speedlight for your night street photography?  I’ve been looking to get out and take some shots with flash and a slow shutter while the Christmas parades are going on here in Bellevue.

I find that the flash can work very well as fill if you take time and care to get settings right. I have not played with flash, dragging shutter and movement (2nd curtain sync style) like I did years back with my Konica Hexar, and R6 for that matter.  With XV, I dial the flash exposure down 2-stops (or less depending) and have gotten nice results. Here are a couple, although the last is Leica X at f4 and same principle applies.

In this one,  and in retrospect, I'd lose the bicycle for the image because the tires distract, but breakfast was getting cold while visiting a friend's loft. Given the darkness in the loft, I wanted the affect of mixing  outdoor light on "mainstreet" and flash here. I dialed the XV flash way down.

This one is more blatant use, but I thought it worked well as my main goal was to preserve the skin tones and also some of the building and environment. And the hot red was important to the image as well.

Straight forward where I could have managed no flash but was happy with how this turned out, agan dialing the flash exposure down.

While not "the tool for the job" X V and nigh shooting, the challenge making pictures while out after dark with it sure is rewarding.

23mm f 4.5 and 1/15th.

There are times when it is refreshing to use one camera and leave others at home. It centers one's attention on the tool at hand.

I just made a post on my website that features a set of images made with the wonderful XVario. The series of images are from a recent visit to Times Square on the afternoon of the unveiling of Kehinde Wiley's sculpture.

I hope you'll take a look https://arttaj.com/kehinde-wiley-rumors-of-war/
